Due to personal reasons, I would not able to relocate to Redmond . I will be joining Microsoft soon and communicated the same to my manager. As per the latest update on post-covid, he expects the team to meet face to face on every sprint planning meetings. I proposed to him that I would be willing to travel to attend the sprint planning meetings as I did not want to lose the opportunity. He informed me that it needs to be checked with HR to allow for fully remote and he said will get back to me by tomorrow. Could someone Please let me know what are the chances of the manager agreeing to fully remote. #engineering #software #swe
Luckily my manager agreed on this. Only thing he said was that company will not be supporting you much for wfh. You will have to manage it yourself.
Were you a new hire when you joined remotely ?or you were already in the company and then got converted to fully remote. Also, what does it mean by “company will not be supporting you much for wfh”.
Yes, I joined post lockdown and all. I have never been to office. Also I am in IDC. By not supporting means, I cannot complain later that I am not feeling good, or feeling left out. Also, I won't be able join parties etc since company won't provide travel reimbursements etc.
Your manager is doing the right thing. And you’ll be fine. They’re not gonna force anyone to come to office or to work from home. If you want to work from home, I’m sure HR is fine with it. The manager just needs to his due diligence with HR is all.
I’m in the same boat - any update? My plan was to join (April start date) and then drop the bomb that I can no longer relocate. I planned to but I no longer can for personal reasons as well
Did you request for full remote? What is the update from your side regarding full remote option?
No I have not requested yet. I wanted to wait to join first and build goodwill/trust just in case. I’m so scared of losing the opportunity due to this
Are you in the US? There's support for full remote roles within the US but things get complicated if you're outside the country you're employed in.
@essG20 yes. I am in the US.
Your manager obviously agrees. The question is of CVP agreeing. I guess it will be fine, but it depends on a group.
I was not sure why the manager told me that he would have to check with HR regarding options related to full remote.
HR has nothing to do with it. It's his org leader who will decide. HR is the last step.
Don’t we have better fully remote policy at Nvidia?
I spoke with my manager at NVidia and he was not sure about the prospects of wfh post covid at NVidia and he said will get back to me after checking with his boss. I prefer to move to Microsoft if they agree on full remote option.
My manager is yet to get back to me about my request. Please advise on how to proceed.
Not much you can do here really. You're basically causing more inconveniences for your team and your manager (and maybe few others) needs to decide whether or not that's worth it. Especially as a new hire you're even more unknown
Sorry OP, hoping it all works out pls keep us looped in!
Any suggestions as to how to proceed. I sent a text message to the manager and he replied back saying “I haven't been able to talk to HR yet. I'm hoping to do that today and have an answer for you”.
I agree with the below comment on saying that you’ll work at a nearby office vs just working from home. Maybe you can also detail a plan that you’ll use to fly like in and out of Seattle to ensure FaceTime and send it to your mgr?
Fully remote work will incur a lot of legal work for HR and difficulties in many departments. There is a workaround for this: if MS has an office near your location, you can join MS at that office as a normal full-time employee. However, tell your manager that you will not be sitting in the office every day, maybe never.
my manager is fine with me relocating to redmond next january or february. my main constraint is the job of my wife. she has been hardly getting any interview calls from the last six months. i do not want to end up in a situation where we have to live in separate cities for jobs. i informed the manager that i cannot have a definitive timeline as to when i would relocate to redmond as it all depends on my wife getting a job in seattle or redmond. i somehow feel that the opportunities for BI engineer in seattle are very low except Amazon and Microsoft. I am currently left with no option but to forego my opportunity with msft.
Microsoft has strictly mentioned in their latest guidance that nobody should be forced to come to office. Senior leadership seems to recommend working from home . I know managers and cvps are also appreciating that they are working from home. Not sure what's wrong with your manager. You could wait to hear his final recommendation but seems like a noise to me.
I was referring to the scenario proposed by my manager after office site resumes operations.
