Microsoft comp system is so weird

The 140% get a better offer and leave The 120% are prepping The 100% don’t care enough to leave The 80% won’t leave The 60% can’t leave Someone who gets 140% and someone who gets 60% get that from the target which is <= 30% of base salary. So it is at max a variance of 10% of base salary of that level from a top performer getting 140% to a low performer getting 60%. Why would you fret all round the year for 10% more.

Yes, Microsoft yearly performance rewards is a joke. Not enough incentive for top performer to stay, and not enough penalty for a low performer to leave. It's a lose lose deal for all. Yet, somehow Microsoft tends to retain people for 10+ years!! Mystery.

Microsoft MWeQ56 OP Dec 16, 2023

It would retain as it means one doesn’t have to perform to stay at Microsoft. But it’s a bad deal both for Microsoft and its top performers. It’s only a good deal for the low performers who don’t need to work to stay

I’ve more than 6 YOE and want to apply for MSFT SWE roles. Which level and org I should target to get atleast 160k as base ?

Microsoft spoiledev Dec 16, 2023

YOE does not matter. Seen 20 YOE come in as SDE II. 160K base salary means L62 in west coast or L63 ish in other areas.
