My friend interview at a Microsoft hiring event recently. 4 coding rounds (surprisingly no design round). 3/4 rounds well flawlessly, all coding questions solved within ~10-15 minutes. For one of the rounds, she used most of the allotted time but reached the desired solution. Behavioral aspect of all the rounds went well too. She has 4 YoE and bachelors in CS. And they leveled her at L59-L60. Recruiter said only one team was interested in going forward. We were expecting L62, with the experience, breadth of work and responsibilities she has at her current role. Any suggestions or advice on how to get the recruiter to level her appropriately? Is our expectation of L62 fair? #tech #compensation #microsoft Edit: recruiter is also adamant on signing the offer by next Friday. We don’t even have an actual offer yet, which we believe we will get sometime next week, and then how are we expected to decide within a few days? Is this normal? Any advice on how we can have them extend the deadline?
Is the TC higher than her current TC?
We don’t have any numbers yet. The hiring manager was adamant that we share our expectations first. My friend told him that her expectations would depend on the level, and that this level does not align with our leveling expectations.
You can check levels.fyi for sample numbers for that level and location
4 yoe is definitely L61. Some people with 10-15 yoe still get L62.
L60
Got L61 with 1.5 yoe
Well done! Any tips on how we should plead our case for up leveling?
Also, we are being given a deadline of next Friday to accept the offer. Even though we will receive the actual offer sometime next week. Any advice on how we can have them extend the deadline?
Don’t think it’s downlevel. I have a friend with Masters in CS + 3 yoe was offered 60.
I know another friend who has 3.5 years of experience, bachelors and was offered TC 220K at L61 a few weeks ago. Although that friend had 2 teams interested in hiring them.
Microsoft L62 is a magical level, it could be 4 YoE, it could be 10 YoE. Every reorg reset your career. And every org holds a major reorganization every 3~5 years. So you can simply join a failed team and get sick of it and join another failing team.
Yeah L61/62 is fair imo
Thank you. How should we effectively convey this to her hiring manager?
Yeah, it's take it or leave it. They're not gonna bump her up 2-3 levels lol. They won't even do 1 most likely.
Min. L61 else No. I think before interview you must know what level u are applying for? Generally for software engineer 2, your level is 61 and 62 is decided after loop is completed. But if the design round did not happen then probably u did not apply to software engineer 2
Microsoft tends to down level. She should interview with us, we are hiring. Feel free to send me the resume
Thank you. She has a final round interview with FB coming up. Although the MS hiring manager spoke today, and said that we have a deadline of next Friday to accept the offer. Even though we don’t have an actual offer yet. Don’t think the FB interview loop will complete by next Friday :(
They are bluffing with that deadline
