Microsoft early terminated my job upon my 2-week notice

Hello everyone - I am posting this so that others are warned when switching between Amazon, Google and Microsoft. I recently resigned from my job at Azure - giving two week notice and being very civil at it. I mentioned to my mgr that I was going to AWS to work on a product that did not compete with what I had worked on at Azure. Microsoft terminated my employment the next day I gave the notice without waiting for my last day. I was expecting a walk out, but didn’t expect to lose my job. I was under the impression (based on the posts on blind) that I would continue having my benefits (insurance etc.) as well as receiving my salary for the last two weeks. Maybe that’s no more... The sad part is that I was being nice and helping out with transition plan etc. giving two week notice. It is really sad that Microsoft has shown hostility and terminated early. We had multiple doctors appt for our newborn after this had happened. In any case, be aware that you not only lose your access to corp, building etc but you also get terminated early, lose your salary and benefits. I confirmed this from the payslip I received along with COBRA insurance notices.

That’s normal, same thing happens at amazon, but you get paid for two weeks. Why would they want you wondering around when they know that you are going to competitor? That’s the main reason why walk out happens. Although your benefits last till end of month normally as the fee was paid to insurance for the month.

I’m upset I didn’t get paid and I also lost my health insurance.

When did you give notice? Did you call insurance to check eligibility?

Microsoft gurra May 22, 2019

What about your salary? Is that also stopped. Also did you receive any sort of paperwork on who you can contact in HR during this stage?

Amazon DPti70 OP May 22, 2019

Yes. Salary was also lost.

Microsoft gurra May 22, 2019

Do you have any papers that you were given?

Microsoft BangTrue! May 22, 2019

Lesson here is not to share with current employer where you are going

Amazon DPti70 OP May 22, 2019

I shared it thinking it was free, paid time off :) I was wrong!

Amazon yacht 🛥 May 22, 2019

Also why does your blind say amazon?

Amazon DPti70 OP May 22, 2019

I’m with Amazon now

See if one of those papers has an HR email. If it does shoot them an email and let them know the situation. It's good to have whatever paper trail you can get. In the future, do this. Before even having the 1 on 1 with your manager. Send them a email with a signed letter indicating your intent to resign. In the letter mention that it's your 2 week notice and that you will help with any transition of duties. Keep a copy of this email for yourself too. If they fire you after you have proven via documentation of your intent to resign, they may be subjected to a lawsuit. I did this at another company and even though I got walked out, received full benefits and salary for 2 weeks.

Make sure to stroke egos in this letter to. Sprinkle things like "I really enjoyed my time here working under Mr.{insert asshole manager name here}". I would even go so far as to give 3 weeks or a month notice. That way you can walk away from a toxic place even sooner and get paid/benefits.

Good point. Even if u had such an a hole mgr, always sprinkle nice words like I enjoyed working with blah blah..

Samsung ultramantaro May 22, 2019

Almost always send a resignation notice by email to HR before talking to your mgr, unless he or she is a true buddy. Otherwise things can turn upside down really fast.

Oracle Makhna May 22, 2019

lesson learnt. never ever tell your current employer where u r going. Tell them something along I have a few offers that I am exploring. I decided to take some time off and then decide or some bs like that. This way they won't walk u out.

Amazon yacht 🛥 May 22, 2019

They still can walk you out

Oracle Makhna May 22, 2019

That is technically true. But why would they do that?

Nvidia chocodaddy May 22, 2019

Lesson learned: don't tell mega corps shit. Don't treat them like people because they don't treat you like a person.

Apple kGUv48 May 23, 2019

That’s pretty typical. They think, why invest two weeks worth of salary more into this guy when we can just fire him and keep that money our selves. It’s why many people don’t give any notice before quitting.

Nvidia chocodaddy May 23, 2019

Which other companies actually fire employees upon two week notice? I've never seen another and genuinely curious.

Amazon DPti70 OP May 24, 2019

Update: Premera did NOT pay up my last doctor appointment which was after the day I got terminated. So basically I was not insured at the time.

Amazon yacht 🛥 May 24, 2019

That sucks! Good to know that Microsoft does this type of stuff
