Microsoft employee laptop?

I’ll be starting as a SWE L62 soon and curious what equipment I’ll be getting? All my experience so far has been on a MacBook Pro and a nervous to switch to windows. Just curious what my equipment options will be. High end? Low end?

Lenovo Thinkpad X1, it works as expected for the first year. Then, it acts as if most of the RAM and CPU power is gone. It will always have to be plugged into the power source.

I have a high end desktop, can I use this? Maybe with a VM?

You could use your personal device but you would need to install profiles on it. Another thing is, if you do a lot of cloud stuff, you might get a second laptop called “SAW”. This for accessing cloud resources. You can’t use personal device for this.

Sometimes you’re just given a device and other times the manager will write you and give you options, but none of them will be a Mac. I do know people though that use their own personal Mac devices. You’re allowed to use personal devices.

You can try to use Mac, but you won’t be able to do a lot of development. It’s best for someone in non-tech role.

Definitely a tech role, and an open to a pc. I just don’t want some floppy plastic, fall apart pc 🫣

double boot linux and enjoy the freedom

This one reason is enough to defer me from considering Microsoft. MacBooks all the way!

Depends on the org. My last new hire got a Surface Book we had laying around from a layoff, the one before that got a brand new one. If you're used to Apple products and are scared to switch to PC, you are joining the wrong company. You need to be flexible,, imagine being asked to fix a bug across multiple platforms 😂

Not scared just nervous about hating the software /OS really. Not my ability to do the work. All the windows computers I’ve owned crash, slow down, etc.

Curious what kind of role you are joining?

I was giving a Lenovo P14s for a corp laptop, 2 Lenovo 1440p monitors and a Thinkstation desktop. That was about 3-4 years ago though. I run VMs in the desktop and just remote into them. Also have a SAW.
