Could someone please explain to me the differences among these roles - Microsoft Director of Engineering vs Senior Director of Engineering vs Principal Group Engineering Manager vs Partner Engineering Manager?
Microsoft titles are bit weird. A Group Engineering Manager is a MoM, so typically a senior engineering manager or M2. A director would be a manager of MoM, so typically M3. Principal and Partner are levels.
Thank you.
Director title is rare. Most orgs have Group EM who report to VPs. You could be an m1 or m2 in principal or partner band, though partner likely bigger org and more significant impact. I would call those different from most others. But there is a reason. Roles and levels are independent. If you are in senior band, you could be an IC or a manager. But that becomes senior manager which gives the impression of m2. Where as its relatively early stage manager.

The higher the level, the more ass you have to kiss 😘🍑, and the less actual work you do.
