Microsoft level

Got an offer from Microsoft for a l60 role when I interviewed for se2. The hm said he can't get me to l61. I have around 2 years experience in the USA, 3 years in my home country and a masters. Would it be a better decision to look into other teams within Microsoft and not accept the current offer? Tc 136k

If you are not happy with the offer, don’t accept it. The happiness quotient is different for every person. For some, it’s the Microsoft brand. For others, it’s the money. For others, it’s the level. Try negotiating on terms that’ll make you happy and if it doesn’t work out, look elsewhere.

Depends on how badly you want the offer. You could have pulled it off if you had competing offers. Having said that, even if you push further and got the higher level, expectations would be a bit higher on you. You have 2 options here: 1. If the team with the current offer is good, you can take this and perform well and get a promotion in an year. If you dont see going anywhere in an year or so with the promotion, vest the stocks for 1 year and jump ship to FAANG. 2. If you are good with your current job and just looking for moving to a stable job at once, take a risk and reject this offer and keep looking. Dont turn back and have regrets about leaving this.

You’re coming from IBM (which Microsoft considers a lower tier company) with 2 yoe. L60 is the correct level. If you’re under levelled, you can get to L61 in a year easily. Your experience before masters doesn’t count for determining current level. I doubt if any other team within Microsoft would up level you - unless you give a loop again and blow their socks off

My suggestion would be not to take it. If you get a bad manager, then he might take 2 years to push to next level. Use this offer to negotiate somewhere else. Still ms carries good weight

Getting a promo in next year is very rare and you need to kiss lots of asses as a new hire to be able to achieve that. But this is usual to put you in L60.

Seems like the correct level. Microsoft doesn’t see IBM as a higher tier company.
