MSFT is advertising IC/M level bands on external postings. However, historical levels data used "L" levels like L64/65. What leveling does Microsoft use internally? If they use "L" levels, what does IC5 map to? Blind seems to be divided on this. Specific situation - Principal Title, IC5 in job posting. Trying to understand which compensation history is more relevant for this, L65 or L64. #tech #microsoft Current TC: $250k
what L level will this Principal be: Product Management M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
That will be 65, you can tell because of the top of the range. There are very few level 66 reqs posted, but if you interview strongly enough you can try to negotiate up to 66
What others said, check Levels.fyi for alignment with other companies, it's pretty decent. Pro-tip on job postings, you can differentiate whether a Principal role is posted as lvl 65 or lvl 66 by the salary range, a 66 role shows the top of the band above $300k, a 65 role high $200's. Lvl 66 IC roles more or less don't exist. Lvl 67 roles and above are recruited differently, you likely won't see a public job posting for them.
