Microsoft levels

I got a reach out from a MS exec recruiter for an architect position. I think based on my lame understanding of MS levels, this is something like 65-67. I'm currently an L8 / principal. I strongly suspect that the comp even at 67 is far below my current TC, and it's probably also a drop in terms of responsibility / scope etc, and MS would only be worth considering at Partner+. But not very sure about MS at all, and I don't think they hire much externally at this level. Is this about right? TC $1.4m

We absolutely hire partner folks externally. My sister org just picked up a Partner PM from AWS.

Good to know. I'd been told it was very, very rare at least for eng.

Why the hack you want to change if making 1.4 m

Grass is always greener, my friend ;) I've actually always wanted to work at MS at least once in my career, but I kind of suspect I might have gotten to a senior enough place that it'll never make sense comp wise.

Highly unlikely Microsoft matches it even at partner level. Bdw what’s your total YOE? And does this TC include stocks appreciation?

20+ yoe, does not include appreciation.

I have 2 friends hired as partners and another co-worker hired as VP.

Microsoft VuwQ31 Jul 1, 2021

you need to join at 69 min to get that tc.

Microsoft zzzzzz..🥸📲 Jul 2, 2021

69 with?

Citibank OutofMem Jul 2, 2021

That’s amazing TC. What do you do at FB?

Microsoft angletread Jul 2, 2021

Partner starts at 68. I agree that that's a high tc which might require up to 69 to match. But you never know they might hire a 68 with a matching offer. We do hire partner level folks externally too. It's often rarer but that would be true always as you go higher. In my experience Microsoft folks at higher levels are a lot more technical than similar folks at other levels. E.g. a Manger at fb won't be as involved in designs and usually all is taken care of by e5s and e6s. At Microsoft if you own a team you are actively involved in where how that fits in the broader picture, roadmap etc. You present RCAs at major incidents and expected to know your shit. So at a partner level you do that all for an org. Many team and services. Hence prior knowledge of stack and software plays a significant role. But if you are motivated and good at learning design stacks quickly and focus on streamlining what matters, you could join, thrive and have a life too

As far as I know, exec recruiters are for 68+
