Microsoft pip/layoff culture

How is job security/stability at Microsoft? I heard like 5-10 years ago Microsoft had regular layoffs but have not heard anything recently. I believe few people were impacted in 2020 and I read one thread where someone was terminated from employment immediately. How is pip/layoff culture in Microsoft? TC:97K

What ?? This post should not exist..

Geico LosSouls Dec 19, 2021

Well they used to layoff, if you worked long enough it would be a stark memory. They laid like 10k ppl off with no larger macro economic factors

What ?? I thought it was a retirement company.. 🙈🙈

Microsoft used to have infrequent, fairly large-scale layoffs and always let people at the bottom of their stack go after their annual review. Although informal stack ranking still exists, pushing out the bottom 5% does not. That doesn't mean poor performers don't get let go, it just means there is no formal URA % like Amazon has.

" That doesn't meet poor performers don't get let go," is that not like PIP though?

GitHub lkurty Dec 27, 2021

I wouldn't worry about a PIP. If you have a manager that's trying to give you a PIP then go to their manager for advice and document everything.

That used to be in Ballmer era. Things have been steady under nadela and I think the main people impacted in 2020 were the middle managers

Microsoft alxqh48 Dec 19, 2021

Fyi They do still layoffs and some Zrs/IRs- maybe not as brutal as amazon. Before people come at me - I am a manager at microsoft and was one at amazon as well - so I know both sides

What is zrs and irs

Microsoft alxqh48 Dec 20, 2021

Zero rewards/insufficient result

Microsoft trips@wrk Dec 19, 2021

There is no PIP culture. Some orgs still get layoffs but engineers have nothing to worry about

Microsoft Bongta Dec 19, 2021

One person in Microsoft SE2 , recently was asked to resign within a week, else was threatened to be fired.

Microsoft trips@wrk Dec 19, 2021

That's just the manager trying to circumvent the company policy since firings take so long and involve HR. That SDEII should report it

Microsoft RgQT63 Dec 19, 2021

Yeah 100%. That person should have choosen to be fired as there are ‘rights’ you’re letting go off if you decide to resign.

Microsoft azurems Dec 19, 2021

There is no PIP culture exists at MS. HR will force managers to help anyone struggling.

@codeing what happened?

Microsoft whoame Dec 19, 2021

No such thing.. job security is there as long as you can feel it in the group you’re in. As long as you’re getting it done.. lots of groups that are understaffed!

Microsoft gives zr ir no stock or bonus and manage out before firing

Zr ir?

The Trade Desk enSI08 Dec 19, 2021

Zr zero rewards ir insufficient results - not meeting expectations

Microsoft Bongta Dec 19, 2021

How to check , it you get IR ? Manager asked to leave but not able to find IR on connect .

The Trade Desk enSI08 Dec 20, 2021

For ir it should be on connect. Note that for zr ir is not required. Zr can be independent of ir.

IBM rLeI77 Dec 27, 2021

Bongta why did manager ask you to leave? Politics or something else?
