I wanted to share my severance success story. I got laid off. L62, <5 years at the company. I asked for more severance and got 2 years of base salary. No additional stocks aside from the 6 months that everyone else got. I was a bit surprise they were willing to negotiate and thought it couldn’t hurt to ask. I’ve read a few sites recommended by the blind community with the negotiation. Please share your success story to help others Yoe: 4.5 Tc:0 There’s multiple post of people being successful with their msft negotiation and even a poll on blind with multiple successes. This is meant to help others give them options.
what was ur process to negotiate?
reached out to hr to schedule a call, and asked a lot of questions, referred to internal legal team, asked them questions and asked if there’s room for flexibility and what’s possible. They didn’t accept right away but came back to me with a better package.
What was your leverage?
Not sure if this played a part and I didn’t talk about it. Only thing I can think of my skip has some unethical interactions with women in his group.
Two friends at Microsoft also negotiated better severance, although with the assistance of an attorney. Microsoft will pay up to get people to go away. Well done, OP.
This only works if you have some sort of legal standing such as being in a protected group.
@glinda, do you know how much more they were able to get and if they had leverage?
2 years?!? Were you harassed or was there legal risk they were trying to mitigate?
Can you negotiate severance even if there was a fake paper trail about your "performance"?
No harm in asking.
Did you use an attorney or did you just reach out to HR asking to negotiate a severance in your own capacity?
two years of base for a layoff with less than 5 years of tenure? why bother even laying you off at that point? financially, they would have been off keeping you.
Clearly OP was privy to information that could have become an expensive lawsuit for the company. So legal determined it was cheaper to pay two years of severance than battle any potential claims in court.
Fake news
Did MS make you sign additional non-disclosure agreement ? That will indicate whether they prevented lawsuit
Yes I was asked to sign a new severance with the new amounts and asked to not sue. I think the original one also ask to not sue.
