Why can Microsoft get away with paying such low salaries? Do they have a lower bar? TC:400k
New here?
Nope but I honestly have never understood the gap vs other tech companies
First time?
Microsoft is a phenomenon. Their products are actually quite terrible and buggy, but for some reason the whole world uses them. They provide virtually zero tech support. Call Apple, Amazon, etc and you’ll get great support. It’s literally a meme that old people fall for “Microsoft support scam calls.” Think about it: an entire industry exists because Microsoft dominated OS market share and IT companies needed to fix bugs, problems, provide antivirus, etc. They’re going to be talking about this 1000 years from now.
It’s vendor lock in, not that difficult to explain why they’re dominant. Legacy tech debt.
The cloud group has been leading the OS group for over ten years now.
Large companies pay less. People will apply anyway because they value some stability. Smaller companies have more risks so they have to pay more to compensate. If all you care about is comp then there are better opportunities than Microsoft.
Given the recent layoffs, do you think the stability is still there?
Maybe not. So maybe the excuse to underpay will be gone now. But they took advantage of it for a good while.
I think they can get away since they are more remote friendly for now. How much less will you take to be full remote? 50k?
Msft pros: still haven’t called in all their employees to come back. So far still wfh friendly. pretty darn stable Safe. I’ve never been asked to unjustifiably place someone into LITE unlike in Amazon Easier promotions so if you are chasing titles this is the right place. Just don’t expect the money. Benefits package is solid.
How is sde2 pay range? Levels.fyi says $200 is that correct?
It ranges from 200-250k from what I remember from my directs. Those directs were newish hires but came from non FAANG
Yeah I've heard it's a good place to get up leveled from faang if you can't get that promotion then boomerang back for the higher level
[Blind] Check out this post! This is how low Microsoft pays (Tech Industry) https://www.teamblind.com/us/s/uqDckNyR
To answer your question the company has expanded outside puget sound since people are willing to accept offers outside
They have crazy numbers of applicants. With recent layoffs, they can even go lower. They also give better salaries to new grads than 61,62 levels. It’s low pay and pip culture in few azure teams. Thanks to Amazon to bring it in Microsoft. So in Msft you get best of both worlds:low pay and toxic/pip , crappy connect, over engineered things, huge amounts of fake work etc
Have you ever worked at MSFT?
