Hi all, I need some advice. Received an offer to work as a full stack mid level developer in Portland. Offer was for 80k which is less than I'm getting now as a system analyst, but my current job doesn't offer any dev opportunity and my lack of that sort of experience has made it hard to find other opportunities. I like the team and the role but it's a $10k cut from where I am now. What are your thoughts? #offer
Hehehehehe. I got that fresh out of college 10 years back. Is this a 10/10 learning opportunity?
Compared to where I am now it most definitely will be. I have to move to a new company to get the kind of experience in the field that I need to advance and I can't get it with my current employer. I'm not sure if it would be better or worse than other opportunities in the area though
10 years later and you are working at Daimler who is and will be laying off 50% or more ...hehehe
I would aim for at least 100k
No go apply to more places and do more leetcode, if you want full stack work just do some lynda courses and throw some projects on public github
New grads get more than 80k with 0 YOE
But yeah if youve tried already with referrals and what not just take what you can get than hop in a year, Im also wary of the job market post election :/ but im just guessing
I’m in Portland. Don’t take it. I got hired at intel straight out of college for like 75k. They don’t pay your worth there. Check out a legit software company in the area. Puppet, New Relic, etc. Mid level at New Relic is 125k base. I bet junior dev would be something like 90k?
Thank you for the advice, that's really helpful.
Worst case take it and do a year of service and move up from there. You can always use it as a way to get in to software dev. But know that staying at intel long term will result in you being underpaid. I know someone who did a year at intel and went on to NR. Same with me (more years though). There are many of us that did this path once we saw the light of software.
The salary sucks and if you can get something else, don't take it. But if you think you'll have trouble getting other dev offers, consider taking it as a resume building move.
Blind is heavily skewed towards higher salaries. People here will not give you great advice as they'll just say "80k is too low!". You should evaluate the career trajectory for you as a developer vs sys analyst and decide whether you can make up the 10k difference in that growth. It also depends on what you enjoy more.
Thanks for the advice, I will consider that. I absolutely want to pursue software development, but have had a hard time finding opportunities which were willing to accept someone with less hands on experience. Opportunity for advancement is limited where I am now and I absolutely cannot move into my company IT Org (it's a wreck) so I have to leave for sure.
