Two of the positions that Google posted recently are almost tailor-made to my specifications and I am about to apply for them. I check all of the requirements posted under minimum qualifications, but not the preferred ones. Just how stringent is Google with these? YOE: 2 (US - 3 month internship) TC: 40k Edit: I actually satisfy 3/5 preferred qualifications as well :)
Why do you feel it was tailor made when you don’t meet the preferred qualifications? You’ll definitely need to have some of the preferred ones checked off.
Hi! I actually meet 3/5 preferred qualifications. I believe the other two are kinda significant. One says that I need to have 4+ YOE in online advertising and the other one suggests that I should have experience managing complex projects. :/
Just go for it. Why do you even think? It is not your job to judge. It is their job to decide. Just apply whatever you want not only just Google but literally everywhere.
I guess this was exactly the kind of answer I was looking for :) Thank you so much!
Friend of mine got SWE at google recently without any prior professional coding experience and without a CS degree. If you think you match a few qualifications, just go for it. Can’t hurt to try
Go ahead and apply but I hear Google gets 50,000 applications a week so you may get lost in the shuffle. If you know anyone at Google, try to get a referral and I don’t mean reach out to random Googlers here because the referral form asks how you know this person you are referring.
IOW, buddy network. 🙂 They have courses at MIT for cracking Google interviews now. Nice brain-washing of the younger generation using brand value.
I don’t know anyone at Google, unfortunately. But I’ll apply for the position nonetheless :)
Google job descriptions don't matter. They have a variety of them to make you feel you're a match, then they put you through a template process for a template job. If you have more than 5 yoe, don't apply unless you're chasing TC. If you're younger, be ready to jump ship in 2-5 years, if you want a long career.
That’s a great advice! Yeah I’m pretty desperate to jump ship right now :)
If you don't apply, your odds of getting the job are zero. If you do apply, the worst case is that you get a "no". That isn't bad unless it hurts your feelings. Your life will be significantly better if you can learn to get a "no" and not take it personally. Apply. If you get a "no", don't feel bad: you took a calculated risk. It didn't work. Who cares? You will get better at interviewing every time you try. Think of the "no" as a step on the road to a better "yes".
I don't think candidates get better in a momentum-killing, 3-4 month interview process! Whatever Google looks for, can very well be done in a one day (or even two consecutive days) of interview.
Thank you so much @eybx18! I just applied! Hope this works out 🙃

I've read (or watched on YT) somewhere that you have to meet all criteria in the "minimum qualifications" and hit a few on the "preferred qualifications".
Ohh! I can hope to score an interview then.. atleast :/
