There isn't a lot of salary information on Blind for Minneapolis/St Paul so I decided to share my offers from when I worked in Minneapolis. All this info is 2018 and later. Also, I share the target bonus I had in my offer letter along with the actual avg bonus I got while working there. The TC is base + actual bonus (excluded sign-on) Best Buy, Sr Engineer (G9): Sign-on: 20k Base: 130k Bonus: 25 % (Actual avg bonus I got ~45%) TC: 188k Target Inc, Engineer (L4) Sign-on: 20k Base: 100k Bonus: 3.5% (Actual avg bonus I got ~4.7%) TC: 104.7k YOE: 10yrs Best Buy TC almost always beats that of the other corporations headquartered in the twin cities (Optum, Target, CH Robinson, US Bank, etc) for the same job level because they have similar base but Best Buy has a larger bonus, 2x - 5x in some cases e.g my 188k tc as a senior beats even that for some Leads at Target which is 1 level above Sr at Best Buy however I'll say Target's infra is way ahead of Best Buy. #target #bestbuy #minnesota #minneapolis #twincities #stpaul
Every time I interviewed with Target it ended up being a shit show one way or another. I was ghosted once, bombed once, the role closed once, etc.
Damn! Luckily that wasn't my experience. I interviewed once and got the job. The recruiter was great at communicating too and everyone I referred to that same recruiter has had a great experience. I know people who have had not so great experiences too. Once referred a friend to the same recruiter but the failed. When they tried again they got another recruiter who ghosted them but another recruiter got their file and continued the process. It was slow but the finally got the job after the long wait. The experience varies
On site for both instances or remote? Drove by the Best Buy hq the other day and that parking lot was dead ☠️
Both companies are hybrid and its team dependent. you are not required to go to the office. All of my ex colleagues do not go to the office at all
I’ve heard good things about working at Target.
I had a great time working there too. Just felt I needed a change after a while. Its a chill place to work
Can you tell me more about working there?
what exactly do you want to know?
Culture, work, people, etc
So in your experience Best Buy has better TC when compared with other corps in Twin Cities? How is WLB at Best buy?
Yes it does have better TC (excluding companies like Microsoft and Amazon that have a presence in MN). They just did an org wide market adjustment for tech employee salaries. One of my buddies got a 20k raise (without asking). The WLB is great. Mostly work the usual hours or less and most managers are very understanding
WLB is exceptional minus teams supporting the actual website and/or during holiday ofc
Thanks for posting this. How was the interview process at Best Buy? I’m staring at CHR soon
The interview process at Best Buy is not standardized so it varies a lot across teams. Generally No leetcode stuff and it’s easy if u prep just a bit. I was an interviewer for my team and also got to help out other teams. These are some of the variations I saw (All of them had 1 recruiter call before the following steps: - 2 - 3 hour session with the WHOLE team where everyone asked both technical and leadership questions. The candidate doesn’t code but can be given a snippet and asked what the result is - 1 hour technical interview split in two; 30 min easy coding stuff and 30 min easy system design (if senior). Then a 1 hr behavioral interview session. Both interviews have 2 interviewers - Take a test on whatever language you’ll be working on then if you pass you meet the manager and an engineer for a mostly behavioral interview. They may ask u a few technical questions on some tools but no coding e.g what do you do if your database starts to run slow (TIP: optimize queries and talk of tools u can use, add caching, etc),
How was the interview at CH Robinson?
