I’ll keep this short..as an ex Netflix employee I can tell you that the ONLY things good about that place is the money and notoriety. For Minorities…ESPECIALLY Black people it can be hell on earth. All the micro aggressions…the gaslighting…the “dance for your check or you’re fired” ideology is…a LOT to handle. When you take that and add the Bay Area and it’s extreme racism towards anyone with a bit of melanin…it can be double hell. This young man likely was going through something prior to moving…and believed the California Dream lie..felt like his new “dream”job would bring forth some happiness and he got to the Bay and walked into Netflix and realized that the place was just a crock of lies and BS. I hope I’m wrong, but as a person that’s felt like saying F it all while working and living in the Bay…I could see this being the likely scenario. Rest in peace to Mr. Kidane.
As software engineers we know a lot about deferred gratification. Well mostly just the “deferred” part, not much the gratification part. In college and high school we study and study and prepare for exams and interviews and don’t usually date or party or have fun. Then suddenly we are thrust into the working world, where we need to work too but also we are suddenly expected to be able to navigate adult friendships and dating. And more often than not, we can’t. We never developed those skills, it wasn’t an exam we could study for. So then we are suddenly well paid emotionally and romantically stunted adults and the pain never ends, it just gets worse and worse until we can’t take it anymore I don’t know if this happened to him, but it’s certainly how I felt
Damn why you calling me out
This is so true. I often spend so much time speaking to direct reports or friends about life and ways to navigate the issues you mentioned Just keep on fighting the good fight and never give up. You got this.
the kid had to of dealt with a buncha racial probs at Cornell, so I would think they have developed thick skin for it. there’s got to be something else going on
There have been multiple previous incidents involving well-heeled New England old money fraternity bros at Cornell.
You’re using this young man’s disappearance to unload your experiences which is not fair. The young man regarded his co-workers highly so I don’t know why you’re using this as an opportunity to rant about racism. FYI: I’m a black guy and went to school in the Bay Area. I experienced none of that and my friends (who are majority black) found the Bay Area to be amazing. Also, not every bad thing that happens to Black people is because of racism. People go missing all the time. My friend, you just needed to rant and that’s okay but a kid just disappeared.
Not the case at all..I’ve had ample opportunities to “rant” even wrote a NYT article about the performative support Silicon Valley offered the Black community while simultaneously pushing them out to places like EPA, Hayward and beyond. Also, the Bay Area can absolutely be a beautiful place but as a black person you cannot deny that there is an inordinate amount of out right racism in housing, education, hiring etc that you have to be willing to ignore 🤷🏿♂️ My Brother is at Stanford right now and he loves it 🤷🏿♂️ He’s also fine with ignoring people calling him the N word. I on the other hand am not. No Black experience is the same but based on MY own experience outside of Oakland natives..statistically Black people exit the Bay at rates higher than any other race. This has been the case since 2017.
You’re exaggerating lol. People are so scared to even say the N word in public lmao. I went to Berkeley and had friends at Stanford and nobody ever called me the N word in the 4-5 years I was there. Institutionally, I agree with you that there’s racism. However, you’d equivalently be surprised by the multiple organizations that are also giving blatant support to the point of showing preference towards black people in hiring, loans etc etc (I’ve been a beneficiary of such as are a lot of other black people). There’s literally loans geared towards black people for home ownership by banks such as Bank of America, diversity initiatives that make it easier for us to get interviews (whether you admit it or not) and a whole lot of initiatives benefiting Black people. If you can’t acknowledge this, then I don’t know what to tell you.
This has to be a troll 🧌 post fr the kid was only at Netflix for like a week or two. He was probably murdered or offed himself for reasons prior to move or due to isolation either way I wish him luck or peace.
Some people think that anything that happens to a black person is because of racism lmao
This. He didn’t even submit a single PR yet. Blaming Netflix culture is such ripe ass bullshit. These new hires were socializing and having the time of their lives with their fat paychecks. I don’t know what happened to him, but what I read about him taking Ubers to dangerous locations and then going solo to the Golden Gate Bridge of all places doesn’t sound good to me. I wish him and his family peace and resolution. This is a horrible situation. And for the OP to air their grievances with this story is just low class.
@netflix I’m not Blaming the culture of Netflix…I’m blaming the environment that Black and brown people are asked to endure to work at a place like Netflix. Just because no one says anything about it to YOU doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist lol Verna herself spoke often about the extreme racism in the Bay…she talked about how she often had to vouch for high earning Black employees that were trying to find a place to rent in the Bay Also, once you’ve gone through the racial ranks of Cornell…to make it to Silicon Valley..it doesn’t take long to realize that the vibe is the same..you know what to expect. Again the only thing im blaming is the environment which isn’t conducive to the mental well being of Black people forced to live in the Bay for top tier opportunity. If you care….go to your ally ship group tomorrow and ask about the Black experience in the Bay. You’ll be surprised
Look her up on Reddit. Lots of threads about her

Lmbo oh shut up and learn some comprehension skills If you think anyone needs a BLIND post to speak on the racism Black people have experienced in the Bay then you’re delusional Black people have experienced extreme racism in the Bay since the days of the Black Panther party of Oakland lmbo

If you think the Bay Area is racist I have a bridge to sell you
Lol I lived there for almost 4 years. I’m originally from the deepest of the south and I can without a doubt say the Bay Area is one of the MOST racist places I have ever lived in my life. Look around and figure out why the Black and African people disappear after 2 years either to LA or some other place lmbo
Respectfully you’re a snowflake. People here aren’t racist, but you sure sound convinced that you’re a victim.
