Applied for backend job in Snapchat. After a verbal offer, the recruiter came back telling me there is no more head count for backend team and asking me if I'd like to join a mobile team and do andriod development. Should I take it considering I have almost no experience in that area? Seeking advices in terms of impact and career growth in mobile team.
take it, you can transfer later
How easy is it to transfer between teams in snap?
easy - talk to your manager or other manager. They want you to succeed
Android development is great, and you will be using a modern ecosystem that is fun to develop in, and will have lasting value on your resume. Think Kotlin, RxJava, Dagger, and others depending on what part of the app you work on. There is also a large and active community of Android devs on slack that are kind and helpful. I would absolutely join, just be ready to devote yourself fully to learning while you come up to speed.
Thanks. I have no problem devoting myself and learn new things. Just not sure if this is a good path for me as I'm getting into senior level. Appeciate the feedback.
There are senior engineers held in high regard all over the org chart, including on Android, including on iOS. If you want to keep doing what you already know and not take the time to learn something new, that totally makes sense. But there is certainly room for advancement on the Android side too.
What is your yoe and offered level for snap?
