I’m talking equivalent L7/8 in both. Obviously not including super high ups. What has better wlb? I feel like managers answer emails all times of day
I’ll give a slight edge to management in terms of pay simply because as an IC it becomes much harder to move up levels. WLB is really team / org dependent. I am a manager (M2) now and my WLB is great but I imagine that other managers will have different experiences. Some managers can go overboard with late night e-mails / weekend work but a lot of times that is personal preference.
Just out of curiosity, how many years did it take for you to get promoted from ICT4 to EM1 ?
ICT4 is technically not a promotion, it is a lateral transition. No pay increase, unless discretionary by new manager. It’s actually more difficult to move up as a manager imo. Fewer and more defined roles for management. If you are not climbing the ladder as an IC, it is either the company (move companies) or your team/manager (switch teams)

Why Pronouns shit captured US ? I don’t see this anywhere else
Pointless question. If you are good at management then you will likely not find the same success in ic track and vice versa. Figure out what you can actually excel at and chase that ladder. Very few people can function well as both high level ic and people manager let alone at the l8 level
I don’t think I excel at either that’s why I’m asking. I don’t see myself as a PE but I don’t like a lot of the things a manager has to do: a lot of meetings, not actually creating anything, more politics, etc. As an SDE2 I am thinking about my long term career plan and am not sure what it should be given these options 😬
So you basically see yourself as neither? Just chill then lol. Sde3 is an ok place to stay. Why set big goals if you can't see yourself with the responsibilities? Also don't become l5 sdm. When you become sde3 youll have a better idea of if PE is your thing or not
