What do you think will be the most realistic outcome, if, say all work visas were suddenly discontinued tomorrow (hypothetically - this isn't a thread to debate about whether this can/will happen or not). #workvisa #h1b #rfe
Your language skills say that you weren't born here. Where did you immigrate from? Don't be a whimp and hide behind blind's anonymity
I am from a country that ruled the world once. I think a first world citizen who can’t compete with immigrants in his own country and requires restrictions is sub-par.
SWE wages would go up. Some jobs will move to other countries. Some visa workers will be replaced by Americans.
There’s really no need for the vast majority of H1Bs in tech when you can get code bootcamp graduates who are already in country, you can train them per your company standards, they tend to accept lower pay just to have a job, and you don’t have to pay visa or relocation fees. Most of my bootcamp graduates are underrepresented people who didn’t have the means to pay for college. So it solves a social justice problem at the same time. Time for companies to get real about their social justice pandering and provide economic opportunity where it’s needed. And that means, less reliance on H1B.
Trump gains a couple percentage points and US tech job market loses appeal. Long term US top notch companies lose value.
Don't you think after November biden will cancel the EO?
You think Biden will win? I hope he does though btw! Even if he is elected he can do that in Jan 2021 when he takes office
Wouldn't forcing tech companies to hire full time instead of contract to hire and changing the laws to make it easier to switch jobs during H1B solve the problem? Then H1B holders will get paid the same as citizens, if they are being unethically forced to work too hard, they can jump to another full time role. This way citizens don't have to be worried about unfair competition because pay, work load will be the same and H1B holders needing Visa application fees, immigration Iawyers will give them an advantage, and H1B holders won't be abused.
You know, when I see all these short sighted arguments about “hiring only American”. I genuinely believe it comes from people who are not managing and growing a team in tech companies. I hope these guys get to that position first, and then I would like to ask how it is going, because hiring and finding candidates, vetting them and/or getting them motivated to be productive is hell in SV.
The US is a country that is made of many global companies. We should be able and allowed to hire people from whereever the fuck we want.
Nothing would change for big companies, they ll try to hire citizens here if they can’t find right fit, they move the job to other location. But there are many small companies which depend on these low wage h1b workers as they can’t hire local talent because they need to pay high salaries or availability of talent. In my view these companies gets affected more.
Looks like you haven’t done any hiring. Let me dispel this myth that H1B employees are “low wage”. > Employers must attest to the Department of Labor that they will pay wages to the H-1B nonimmigrant workers that are at least equal to the actual wage paid by the employer to other workers with similar experience and qualifications for the job in question, or the prevailing wage for the occupation in the area of intended employment – whichever is greater. @ebay: I know H1Bs are not paid less in big companies like from FAANG to eBay. But there are so many small companies like, small insurance companies, car dealer companies, small e-commerce companies they hire low cost h1b through as contractors or through bodyshopping companies, they wil get affected. I know some ppl for the fact how much they make in some of those companies.
Long term effects will largely depend on the outcome of the elections in Nov. Whatever is going to happen now will be short lived. If Democrats win they will get us back to the Obama era which doesn't benefit the backlogged countries btw. If Republicans stay they will try to reduce overall immigration but may also come up with a point based system that might benefit some who has higher degrees
I’m very excited for Canadian tech. It’s not good for high paying tech jobs to be concentrated in a few cities in one or two countries.
@bokko thank you for your comment. Xenophobia is usually veiled, but it’s heartening to see someone who is not just bigoted but unapologetically so. You must make your parents proud every single day of their lives. On the topic of languages, there is a large community of Punjabi speaking Canadians who have enhanced the country with their culture and hard work. Hindi speaking Canadians are equally welcome to contribute to the country’s fabric. Now if you were trying to insinuate that non-anglophone immigrants to Canada (and possibly the US) were inferior because they didn’t speak English natively, you may want to take a good hard look at the mirror yourself. Judging from your reply, you have quite a way to go yourself, champ :)
Definitely not “replace visa workers with Americans”. This is a meritocracy we will not lower the bar to someone subpar just because they’re American. This is horrible for tech - way more outsourcing and they’re gonna start realizing our TCs are not worth and someone in China/India can do it for so much cheaper
^ Another entitled H1B who thinks all Americans are subpar to "talented" H1Bs.
Netflix, if an American company can fill its open roles solely with Americans why would they not want that to avoid paying extra $$ on visa application fees + immigration lawyers?
