Motivation issues at work

Saw a psychiatrist and have a referral for a neuro-psych eval for suspected ADHD. Has anyone had one of these over 40 years? Do I need to prep for it?

I have ADHD but typically it’s something that manifests pre adulthood. Have you had this your whole life? What level are you? Wouldn’t think it’d be easy to survive at Fb with it...

but you are surviving at Google?

Not easily, and I’m also lower level.

Kids who are learning about the world are motivated neither by pain nor by unhappiness. They are motivated by the joy of life and excitement of living, which offers a never-ending supply of motivation that uplifts, gives them that sparkle in their eyes. Why do you think it is such a joy to watch a child explore the world and learn? Why is it so captivating to watch as they learn how to pour water into a glass, and the excitement and joy they feel doing it? For that exact reason. If it is pretty obvious that one has more mental resources and energy when they feel the effortlessness of living, the joy of life, wouldn’t you then agree that kids have something to remind us of - our birthright, of what most us have forgotten? One does not need to punish oneself to achieve one’s goals, and can instead see the journey to the goal as its own reward. And then no matter what you end up doing - you’re doing the right thing. No matter the result - you’re walking your own path and you know you are exactly where you need to be. Life becomes effortless. Do you think you’re ever going to experience lack of motivation while living such lifestyle? What an irrelevant question, isn’t it? Ask yourself: is it at all possible that your supposed lack of motivation and ADHD are nothing but SYMPTOMS of you logically planning your life, logically deducing that which you call motivation? What drives you in life?

What about leaving this bullshit aside and letting the Dr diagnose it?

Microsoft MP3 Jan 1, 2019

Some think it is normal to be on antidepressants for 5 years (my roommate & his doctor). Some think it is the right thing to do to feed your kid meth (Adderall) for what 30 years ago was called restlessness. You know how they prevent/treat depression in retirement homes in Japan? They have a daycare in the same building and let retirees play with the kids. No need for pills or therapy. They are already starting to do something similar in US, they have a program in Seattle.

I had the symptoms almost all my life but waited until 30 to finally get evaluated. Absolutely wish I would’ve done it earlier.

Did they put you on meds?

Stripe bt6475 Jan 1, 2019

Recently diagnosed with ADHD. I lost my job at Stripe due to my issues. When I was put on PIP I decided to go see a psychiatrist about it (also got a second opinion and they both agreed I have it). The PIPs at stripe only last 4 weeks. So even though I started medicating immediately and my performance improved, it was too late to fix those issues. I was tested for ADD as a child but found to not have it. The definition has changed substantially since then, so it explains the misdiagnosis. I’m now on adderall and it has made a big difference. I start my next job later this month, so ask back in 6 months if it makes a difference with job performance.

Glad to know you found something. Did you land an equally good or better position?

Stripe bt6475 Jan 1, 2019

Thanks! In a way, yes. It’s more in the area I want to work in and on problems I am interested in. But it was a bit of a decline in TC/perks. I’m still pretty early in my career, so I’m not too bothered by that (optimizing for growth/learning at this stage).

Burnout?

Google CXvT53 Jan 1, 2019

I'm in my 40s and started on ADHD meds recently. It made me less anxious in public settings and more productive writing technical documentation. I had symptoms all my life, and absolutely wish I did it earlier.

A symptom of our current working conditions, it's not natural to sit at a desk all day typing. After 30+ years you work that out whether you like it or not. Every day is a struggle but I just keep trying to change things up to spark new interest. I do not have ADD, there is no such thing, I just have other places I would rather be but need the money.
