Is it worth it financially? Don't care much about weather at all. Just tired of bleeding money on rent every month
TC in both places?
~200k Bay area, ~180k Austin assuming no change in stocks
Isn't that a 10% drop, how is it 17%?
No state tax..!
It's worth it.i live in Austin and I wouldn't move to SF without 40 percent more pay.
Definitely! Congratulations!!
In Austin we have a house with a swimming pool and yard 4 miles /10 min uber ride from downtown for $450k. Can't touch that in SF.
Where is this house? Austin still has plenty of cheap areas but $450k within 4 miles of downtown (and big enough to have a pool) is not common.
May be you bought long ago or got a really good deal!
17% cut in pay will probably be offset by cost of living and no state income tax. Be warned though ATX is becoming crowded and the infrastructure of the city isn’t met to hold the growing population. Rates will go up, and traffic will get worse. But still probably better than San Fran at this point. I don’t see anyone shitting on the sidewalk here..
I would say definitely worth it for your current job. Where it will hurt more IMO is your next job. Not a lot of jumping points coming from Google. Maybe if FB starts to add more engineering... Honestly if you "don't care about weather" the Bay Area sucks. I like Austin more as a city. Weather is much, much, better in CA though.
Weather is bad in Austin?
Compared to the Bay Area, yes, compared to Chicago, no.
No big deal acc to me. Housing costs are 1/3rd. And there are no state taxes. You will be richer in Austin.
Depends on home you purchase and the requisite property taxes. Not unusual to pay $30K/year in taxes for a nice/large home.

How long do you usually read every day?
If it was perhaps ten percent I'd say, definitely. 17% is a lot. Costs are going up in Austin as well. If you plan to purchase a property know that the taxes are higher.
With the high state taxes and high SF cost of living, 17% drop is nothing to live in TX. I live in Texas (DFW area) and you get 4,000/sq foot home for $390K to $450K and no state income tax. So, when you run the numbers for cheaper cost of living and keeping all the taxes CA would take, you actually are getting a pay raise. I relocated here and don’t plan on moving anytime soon. I keep more money in my pocket. There is no wonder why more people are moving from CA to TX than any other state. 😁 And like the native Texans say, “Don’t come California my Texas”
I lived in Austin for ten years. I did the reverse. Just didn't have the opportunities for me. Loved Austin, don't get me wrong, but job wise the Bay Area wins hands down.
