6 months of STEM OPT and considering all the alternatives. I have a BS from a US university, so I can get a Master's and/or Ph.D. and get back into the market (and even try to qualify for O1 in the future if I play my cards right). On the other hand, I'm thinking that moving to Canada might be a good option since it's much more immigrant-friendly and I can come back to the US in 5 or so years with Canadian citizenship if I desire so. What do you think is the smarter move here?
If you move to Canada, be ready for real cold, snow and short days in the winter
What does GC wait time look like for you? If you do get a masters, you should try for companies that start GC on F1. Also, cant bytedance move you?
There's a chance that Bytedance will move me, but it's too uncertain. Since transferring teams is almost equivalent to getting a new job, I can only hope that they'll allow me to work for the same team in a different country. HR told me it was possible, but a colleague of mine was in a similar position, and they refused to move him despite the initial promises. I'm not from one of the countries with the long wait time. From what I know, it should take me around 5 years to get a GC. My real issue right now is getting H1B.
See if you can get into amazon ro something that can relocate to canada. They will bring you back too.
If your goal is the US, stay in the US. If it's Canada, then move Canada does have easy immigration paths but I would not consider it overly immigrant friendly any longer.. My family is there and they are suffering under the strain of over immigration to the medical system and other infrastructure.
Everything else equal, I'd choose the US over Canada. My main concern with staying in the States is having to rely on a lottery. Winning the H1B lottery is already at 25%, and I can see how the chances will be getting worse every year. PhD -> EB1 is always an alternative, but I'm not excited about being a grad student up until my early 30s.
Who knows how bad the future of economy looks. Glinda any idea of economy, recession etc
Papers are very important. Move to Canada
