Is it possible to join Google Internal Audit as an L4 Controls Test Engineer and then transition to a TPM/PM/EM role after a couple of years? Or is that an unlikely path? I would also be done with my weekend MBA from Chicago Booth by then. Alternative is P3 role as an SDET at Splunk. #pm #tpm #sdet #audit
Internal audit, that's some serious back-office shit that nobody on the actual product teams cares about. Doing a ladder transfer at G is non-trivial although some are easier than others - going to TPM will be much easier than PM or EM. I have no idea what controls test engineer is but it's probably not on the standard SWE ladder. EM you would have to transfer to SWE ladder as an IC and then get promoted a few times. PM will be a hard transfer from a role where you're not working on an actual product at all. That sounds like a shitty role unless you can transfer to an actual product team as a test engineer after a year
Your title say you want to move to TPM role, but your post description say joining Google Internal Audit team. Which one is it? As for joining internal audit team, I don’t know your background but 99% of internal audit team is “scared” of Engineer joining their team. That is, if your background and work experiences is in Engineering, most audit team will not even bother interviewing you. I was an engineer and switched to audit in 2000’s due to the dot-com bust. At that time, audit teams will love to have Engineers on their team. Today, internal audit team is looking for a “check box” person. If you like that kind of work, go for it.
Which of those jobs do you want? They are all very different.
I am not sure which one I will want to pursue eventually yet, but am afraid picking Google Internal Audit over Splunk SDET might limit my chances of getting into any of these three in the future.
