Move to US from Canada?
i moved to Toronto with PR 2.5 years ago. i have worked in US before on L1B Visa for 5 years and have felt the uncertainity. Any fellow tech Canadians, what are your thoughts on moving to US on a H1-B visa? Would you rather wait to be a citizen and then try US after 4 years in Canada are done ?

I grew up in Canada as a PR. Never got citizenship. Moved to the US 20 years ago and became a citizen here. Even with my closest family still living in Canada, I don’t think I’d ever move back there - taxes are too high. I’d only want the citizenship to add to my collection but never with intent to move back.
Canadian citizen here. Canada is safer but cost of living in comparison to the income is ridiculously high. Also on top of that taxes in Canada are much higher too.
Canadian here too. I’ve worked in Canada for > 10 years. Now living in California. And to be honest, I don’t feel that Canadian’s taxation is as high as everybody say. But I take into account my healthcare expense and housing in the equation. Maybe if I lived in some other states where there is literally no state tax I would say differently.
Was TN (NAFTA status) and eventually was able to change my status to H1B. And that’s one part of the game. You have to understand that under these status you are a temporary worker. The day you stop doing what you were supposed to, you have to leave. These are the rules you have to follow.
I would try to get Canadian citizenship first and use that as a backup if shit hits the fan in the USA with immigration Also h1b is a lottery and you may never win. easier to use the TN to work in the USA
Your 6 months away from a citizenship lol.Just get it and then go.From then on your life will be so much easier. Canada has a ton of problems IMO.Pathetic pay is the issue not taxes as such.

It’s actually 6-7 months in qualifying and then 1 year of processing time and then getting the TN visa. I agree with you though taxes isn’t a big issue as people cite, pay is. When I moved from US to Canada, both me and my wife took a very minor drop on our pay. We thought that as a temporary sacrifice. If I want to live in US for the long term, TN is not the answer. Was checking what other fellow Canadian techs are planning. I think I would try for H1b or a L1a at that time.
