Moving from Cali to East Coast

Can anyone share experience moving from Wast Coast to East Coast? All America I know is California. I like it here, but let's face it - I cannot afford it. So I am thinking more and more about East Coast. I've been briefly to NYC - and it is hell. Then I visited Wash. DC, and I rather liked it. Any other places i'd want to consider? I want to work for an engineering company, not a bank, an insurance company, etc.

Make more money.

VMware bububu OP Jul 22, 2018

Well I am trying to, but so far not much success. To buy anything here, I need to make at least $400K, and even with this income I'll have to pay mortgage untill I die. This is fucking depressing...

Are you DINK? It should be easy to pull in at least 300-400k with two incomes. It might sound dumb, but save hard and invest your income. Saving just 50k/year is 1.2m in about 15 years w/ compounding interest of 6%. Boom, paid off home in 15 years.

People will be direct. To a West coaster it will feel mean/unfriendly. It's not. You'll know when people are being mean. You will also know who likes you and who tolerates you.

Quite the contrary, most smaller east coast communities felt very friendly. Weather is a different deal though. And then there are the opportunities here in California you likely won't find elsewhere

Post doesn't say anything about people being unfriendly...

VMware bububu OP Jul 22, 2018

I am worried more about climate, not people. I am ok with any people, as long as they don't shoot me when hearing foreign accent.

Just buy a coat you’ll be ok

Everyone is going the other direction pal. Stay where you are.

VMware bububu OP Jul 22, 2018

Zoya, does your last name start with "B"?

LinkedIn ZoyaGoya Jul 22, 2018

Incorrect guess, pal. And irrelevant to the topic. Stay where you are, east coast is horseshit.

Your not going to be treated as special on the east coast. Generally tech workers are support people. Make sure if you do make the move, you do join a tech company

I made the move from the West coast to East. I was living in Oregon before though, so cost of living between the two was comparable. Just wanted to be closer to family.

I would say Boston, Massachusetts, but it’s pretty expensive there too. Consider Austin, TX if affordability/good schools/weather is your concern.

Both great areas. Check out Pittsburgh or Philly as well.

DC Area is awesome. You get used to the weather. Price matters.

Northrop Grumman ajjfji Jul 23, 2018

There's a couple nuggets in the DC area. Montgomery county has some of the best schools in the country. It's also one of the wealthiest in the country. Homes will still be close to a mil though, albeit much bigger. Look at Potomac, Bethesda, chevy chase in MD. Or if you want to be in NOVA look at Arlington, McLean, Vienna.

Move to Seattle. It’s already been taken over by Californians.

VMware bububu OP Jul 23, 2018

Visited there - depressing weather, depressing people, and I hear not much cheaper now than SFBA.
