Moving from US > CA

Currently living in California, but given the rate at which the shit is hitting the fan wrt basic human rights, the spouse and I are very seriously considering leaving the country for good in the next two years, if not sooner. Canada makes the most sense, for a variety of reasons. It also seems to make the most sense for about 1/3 of the rest of the US population, so I'm guessing that isn't going to be particularly easy. Has anyone here relocated from the US (as a US citizen) to CA for work? Or somewhere else? Or not for work, but found work wherever you landed? How much of a pain in the ass was it? Do non-US companies even hire USians? Or has the rest of the planet just decided we're all hopelessly fat and ignorant? SDET, 8 yoe, still haven't figured out this whole TC thing, but I think maybe 160? Edit, since I obviously wasn't clear the first time: - I'm interested in job market and logistics. I'm fairly well educated on general politics, and that's not what this post was intended to be about. - "Seriously considering" was poor word choice on my part. We're definitely relocating, but when and to where is still up in the air. My spouse's birth country is one possibility, but it's not ideal. Canada isn't our preferred destination, but it seems the most likely and reasonable, hence the subject of this post. - The 1/3 of the population bit was snark in reference to the surge of interest (however superficial) in moving to Canada over the past year and a half.

I highly doubt the political climate affects anything in your daily life... This whole idea is ridiculous

AXS lafes OP Jun 28, 2018

Considering you have no knowledge of my daily life, I highly doubt you would know how it will be (and already had been) affected. Thanks for your helpful input, though.

@OP, You are asking for opinions of moving to another country - which is a major life event. The reasons for having a pleasant and unpleasant move to another country has various factors depending on why you want to move. You don't give us any information yet you want a meaningful response.

“USians” ... We’re Americans. Hi. Let us know when you sell your house. Seems only fair to list it at what you paid since tech people cause divisions in neighborhoods and cost of living increase, right?

AXS lafes OP Jun 28, 2018

Yes, we're Americans. So are people in Canada and Mexico. Maybe take a look at a map?

What is the shit hitting the fan with regards to basic human rights?

Did you miss the whole “children in cages” thing?

Stop watching the news

Amazon djdjie+$2) Jun 28, 2018

Yes the news is poison filled with negativity only to get you worked up. This gets you to watch/read more. The media tends to gin up a lot of stories.

Putting politics aside, what I've heard about Canada is that many employers there consider "Canadian experience" when hiring. In other words, how much of your work has been done in Canada and how long you've been there. You can likely get a job there, but don't expect anything senior level - you may have to start from a lower level again. Another option is to get a job with a large company here in the US that has international offices and request a transfer down the line.

Microsoft IBKl87 Jun 28, 2018

That’s bullshit for SDE positions. US experience is well regarded everywhere especially at top companies.

AXS lafes OP Jun 28, 2018

Finally, something helpful. Thank you.

If you actually think 1/3 of the US population is seriously considering moving to Canada....you are incorrect. Good luck.

The grass is not always greener, In CA in t may be a little more sticky and icky.....good luck

CA = communism, US = rest of capitalism. Choose your destination.

Bank of The West ySXF03 Jun 28, 2018

Lol which world you live in? CA = Fast paced metro liberal life. The communism is a myth. There are small pockets of “villages” between northern and southern ca just similar to rest of the USA (exclude NY and bigger cities) Rest most of US = Villages and corporation taking over everything.

I haven’t relocated, but my girlfriend (an engineer) is from Quebec and she says the tech companies there are actively trying to get people to relocate and come work.

AXS lafes OP Jun 28, 2018

Any companies in particular?

Microsoft TuXm85 Jun 28, 2018

I’ll try to get a list for you. In particular, I know Ubisoft is looking.
