I am moving from Chi to Bay Area for good even before my company gives me a green light. I communicated my interest in moving to my manager and higher ups, all are good with it, but HR told to wait until a year in the company because of recent Trump’s H1B salary hike (now there’s a stay on it) rule. I would restart my talks in May 2021. My plan is to find a master bedroom in SF by March/April and then move to CA on papers after speaking with my office. TC: 145k Hopes on year end review for salary hike. Even after this ^, if it is not sufficient (which I know, will not be) after my move, I will find a high paying job. The things I am thinking about and need help with, 1. With this ^ TC I am more than happy in Chi, how will it be in SF? 2. WLB in Chi is amazing - I worked in SF in small startups right after school, it was hectic as hell. 3. Is SF/CA’s charm more valuable than Chicago’s calm? #moving #california #chicago #engineering #bayarea
Have you seen the homelessness problem in SF? Terrible, and all the fires we've had recently. I've been trying to get out to other places in the northeast where there's more opportunities
I’m from LA and even though it has its problems Bay Area is way worse and I’d never move there. Congested, expensive, dirty.
Negative nancies in this thread, and generally on Blind, love to shit on the Bay Area with their exhausting Fox News talking points. Yes, Bay Area is crowded and there are a lot of homeless in parts of the major cities. On the other hand, it has some of the most incredible recreational activities all within 50-80 miles in either direction. Ocean, world-class hiking/cycling, world-class skiing in Tahoe, Yosemite a 4.5hr drive, temperate climate, a very tolerant culture of people from diff backgrounds/life experiences, educated populace, relatively low violent crime, arguably the top job market in the country / world. Before covid, SF/Oakland had one of the most vibrant music scenes. The bar/social scene was great, many beautiful women, etc. From my personal experience, the main issues with the Bay are affordability and density. I live in SF and homeless aren’t that visible besides a few sections in downtown. It’s a sad situation but I just ignore it and it doesn’t affect me much.
I like this optimism and I am trying to figure out things as is. I went to school in Cali and lived there for 3 years. planning to come back as I like it there. Now, coming to SF, the rent difference from Chi and SF is +500$ for what I am doing here vs there. I am trying to understand, what all should I compare or think about before moving.
Consider whether you’re willing to put up with the negatives. Positives are definitely there and are great. For example I’m from LA and I would never want to live in downtown because of how congested/dirty it is. However I’m willing to live a little bit further out from downtown and make the commute. I’m further from the main city but I get to have a front lawn and backyard. Not as much traffic. It all comes down to how negative the negatives are for you.
Why you want to move? You might have to live under the bridge in SF
Oh, thats cold, you talking about the living expenses/rents?
Both, Don’t do it
