I’m taking up a new job in the north suburbs of Chicago. I’ve lived downtown for 10 years and my wife has never lived outside a downtown area. Any recommendations on a good suburb? TC: 350k
If with 10yoe I am not making 350K, I am packing bags.. ps I am in Bay Area
I still don’t understand how so many people live in Chi when it’s freezing half of the year
Evanston if you want diversity, Winnetka if you don’t. I personally like Evanston, as there is a lot to do locally, but still accessible to the city. You do have to check out areas a bit more, as there are areas you probably wouldn’t want to live in parts of Evanston. Find some houses you like, take a drive (or train) up and walk around…get a feel for the areas…
I was looking at Evanston, but it is still too far from work with the traffic. I’m very concerned about diversity. Any thoughts on Vernon Hills/Libertyville area?
Both have good schools etc…if that is something that is important to you now or down the road. Vernon Hills is probably a bit more diverse; however, Libertyville has a nice downtown area with more to do/less chains etc…
Grew up and lived in the suburbs for over 15 years. My recommendation would be Schaumburg for peace and quiet. Vernon Hills/Libertyville is also good but it's a bit self contained. As in the city has everything but everything else is a bit far away. Arlington Heights is also great but it's a little tight in terms of space in my opinion. Gurnee is also an option but it's a bit too far north for my liking. Are you looking to rent or buy? I gave the recommendations above if you're buying.
Thanks! Definitely looking at buying a place. Looking forward to a lot more space after living in a condo.
I used to live in Lindenhurst and Gurnee for over 10 years. Both are nice and quiet, especially Lindenhurst. The schools are great and the community is peaceful, however, besides hiking/biking in the local forest preserves, there's not much to do there. As someone else mentioned, Libertyville has a nice downtown and some neat restaurants, while Vernon Hills offers more shopping options (mostly chain stores though). If you have the option of staying closer to the 94/294 junction, then I would also recommend Highland Park. It's close to the botanical gardens and has a nice feel to it. There are a few little towns/villages sprinkled on the north side (Lincolnshire, Winnetka, Wilmette, Kennilworth, Ravinia) that are all great - but are super pricey and likely lacking in diversity.
Thanks! Hiking and biking are two of our main interests, so Lindenhurst sounds good. I haven’t looked at Highland Park, but will take a look.
Skokie is pretty good in the north.
Glenview is where a lot of Former NBA players lived. Lot of good Korean food around there too.
Totally unrelated question - curious to know does EY have TC’s in 300k + ranges ?
Exactly my question
350k in Chicago is a kingly salary
