I’m 35, married, two kids (1 & 3 year old) w/ 12 yoe (post Masters degree). Planning to move back to India and wanted feedback/advice. Note: I’m moving to Microsoft in late March and plan to transfer to Microsoft India in about a year. Wife already works at Microsoft. Microsoft offer details: L65 PM, 402k tc for 2 years (base - 210k, target bonus - 42k, stock - 400k/4, joining bonus - 100k/2) and then 352k the next two years. My base will be adjusted to around 50 lakh rupees when I move to India but I’ll keep my stocks. So, that’s about 72 lakh stock / year for three years. Wife’s job: L64 SDE, 300k tc (3 more years of 80k / year stock vesting left). Our savings are about 2.2M investments and 500k home equity. I.e. about 16 crores in investments and 3.6 crores home equity. Our plan is to use the home equity to buy a house in India and furnish it. We’ll keep our investments growing. We’re planning on working in India until my last stock vest (about 3 years after moving) and then retiring. Does this move look good?

First plan to get a job in a company who does internal transfers in India😬
Lol. US stock grants continuing to vest in India were way too appealing.
What's the tax liability for the stocks if you're in India?
I have similar plan. One friend did this. So far no surprises except for bit of reverse culture shock adjusting back to India.
Were costs in India inline with their expectations?
Not sure. Might depend on the city. You might want to check it out on your next visit to India.
Curious... Why go back? Is it the GC battle that you don’t want to fight anymore? Or do you want to retire in a low cost of living place and India fits the bill with friends and family being there?
Yeah. We don’t want to deal with the GC uncertainty anymore, our parents are getting older and we want to take a break from the rat race (which isn’t possible in the US until we got our GC). Our priority date is Dec 2012 so it’s not coming anytime soon.
Gotcha. All the best. :)
Good luck bro!! Thats sounds like my plan also. Almost in same situational (age, kids age, TC etc), except savings are 50% yet I am motivated for the move.
Thanks! All the best to you too.
If that’s your only takeaway, you can shove it where the sun don’t shine.
Do you care giving little detail about your investment portfolio? It really helps.
For sure: About 900k in a mix of index funds (VTI, Fidelity zero cost funds, VTSAAX etc) 400k in a mix of tech funds (FB, Amzn, Microsoft, Google) Another 100k in crypto (Bitcoin, ETH) 300k in a mix of high growth stocks (Square, Tesla, Chipotle, Chwy) 200k in a mix of bonds 300k with Betterment
Thank you and good luck with your move!
Sounds like a great plan. Congrats on the savings. Which city do you plan to retire in India?
Pune. Both our parents live there. We’ll be buying our home close to both of theirs.
I studied/lived in Pune for a bit, you'll be able to live more than comfortably with your TC!
That's my plan right there but I don't have even 1% of savings what you have right now
You’ll get there. Keep your chin tucked and keep marching on. It took us 12 long years and many setbacks along the way.
OP I think you are a little lucky that your wife also earns high TC as a SWE. Most of us ugly dudes have to rely on our mommies to set us up with someone from India. So unless we hit a pre ipo jackpot it's difficult to make that much before 35
