I make more money than I ever dreamed of, so why am I not happy?
I have a 2016 entry level sedan, the KBB value of the car is ~10-11k. Mileage is ~30k miles, I am the second owner. Should i sell it off before moving, or should i ship it to New Jersey, if yes how much it will cost and is it worth it? Does a used car cost less in Jersey area compare to west coast? I will need a car in Jersey, so if I sell it off here I will have to buy one in ~6 months. I also thought about driving it to Jersey, but that will be a loong drive, not sure how many days it will take.
I would keep it. It’s not only ship value vs current car value, its ship value vs what your hypothetical new car would cost. I think shipping is like 1-2k which is worth it, if you factor in gas and maintenance sometimes it’s cheaper to ship than drive
Drive it. Use 1500 to see the country.
Many people I know have driven across the country. If you’re really extreme and have a partner who can drive while you rest, you can make it over a long weekend. Something I remember about used cars on the East Coast - they’re much less well-preserved than on the West Coast. It’s both the weather/road conditions (=snow) and the driving behavior. So, maybe you want to keep your car, if you don’t want a change. I’ve always thought keeping a car as long as you can is respectable :)
ship or drive. you can do it in a week comfortably
Ship. You will waste the price of shipping on taking Ubers in New Jersey until you get a car. It's not that expensive to ship. If you're buying an equivalent used car, you won't know what you're getting into vs. having a good car that you know is reliable. You could buy a used car and have to put 1500 into it easily. Plus pay taxes on the purchase amount. Overall, it's easier, cheaper and less of a headache to ship it. Get quotes on U Ship. I've used it several times and my brother in law uses it all the time because he's in the car business and always getting cars, fixing them up and selling to acquaintances from the car scene. Never had an issue.
This guy cars
Cars have more value on WC than EC but a WC car in Jersey would fetch a higher selling price in Jersey. Anything you pickup out there will have to be newer than you currently own to be in a comparable quality state. Road Salt is real and maintenance is low out there. Over budget and call it $2k to ship or $1000 to drive. Drive it out. 48hrs central Cali to NJ Turnpike Exit 10. Have done it several times. 20 hrs, 8 hr motel break, 20 hrs. Done. No speeding but no effing around with stops other than food, fuel and restrooms in one stop. You can stretch it out further of course if you have time and want to visit a few things.
Don’t be cheap. Pay the money to ship your rust free California car to NJ.
Sell it. An eight year old car is almost at the end of its life.
But it has very few miles on it
Ignore that trash post. 2016 with 30k, ride it till it dies. Even better is that it’s paid off I’m sure so you won’t care if it rusts away, gets scrapes, dings and dents out in Jersey. Especially if you drive it downtown to any of the major metros. Won’t be scared to do the Philly tap when parallel parking.
Better ship it if it’s in good condition. It costs 1200-1500 USD. Wait for best deal on shipping.
Cost of moving car will be less than $1500
