Moving to Vancouver after becoming SDE2 L5 at amazon India.

My brother just got promoted to SDE2 L5 at Amazon India. After checking with his friends in US, he figured out that for internal transfer he has to spend atleast 1 year as SDE2 in India. Does moving to other countries like Canada also has these restrictions or it is only specific to US? My TC: 210k CAD Brother's TC: 25,00000 INR.

What's sde2 L5? I thought senior / l5 was sde3.

Booking.com yfRV86 Nov 23, 2019

L6 is sde3, however I am hearing that they have senior software engineer at L5 as well

@ghbki a simple search on blind can give an answer. Where were you living until now? In a cave?

1 year is there for *ALL* international transfers from India. The rule is more strictly enforced if the employee is under Jeff Wilke's S-Team.

Microsoft god_legacy OP Nov 23, 2019

Hmm, I am external hire and Amazon offered me direct entry into Vancouver office. I interviewed in Amazon Hyderabad office. That's why I was thinking may be this rule is only for US. This is really unfair to internal employees of amazon. What's the point of hiring from outside directly for Vancouver and not allowing internal employees to move? Strange.

Is it you or is it your brother?

210k CAD is good TC based on Canadian pay. What's the role and YOE?

Microsoft god_legacy OP Nov 23, 2019

L5, SDE, yoe: 7

Nokia scre Nov 23, 2019

Did you move from US or direct Hire in Canada?

Qualtrics wudu Nov 23, 2019

There is a reason for this. HR collected the data and found that the newly promoted SDE 2 in India is not equivalent to newly promoted SDE 2 in US/CA, mainly because majority of US SDEs have prior experience and masters before joining as SDE 1 in Amazon. Most of the international SDE 2 transfers from India were getting into low performers in US. To level out the field, they imposed this rule. The issues are not on technical bar, but mostly on soft skills (aka LPs in Amazon).

Microsoft god_legacy OP Nov 23, 2019

Lol, this sounds like an excuse to me. In India getting promoted is far difficult than in US. Even cracking interview is far more difficult in India than in US (due to competition here). If the issue is with soft skills, even if candidate will stay in same position for a year, it's highly unlikely to improve.
