Idk moral is higher than ever, we all love sundar!
Definitely feel like layoffs are the singular most expensive thing a company can do to “cut costs.” Especially if it appears random! Layoff an entire org or product line, and the remaining employees will justify it as, “glad I didn’t work on that failing project.” But lay off randomly from within teams and the remnants will feel the loss of their immediate colleagues and lose faith in the company. The good engineers will start interviewing and leave. Only the incompetent will stay and try to continue working.
Same thing happened with IBM in the past.
You essentially black pill your entire workforce. People start caring less and less about promos, putting in extra work, building a company culture and all the other things fundamental to companies when they think they can be booted at any moment. The same way gig workers and minimum wage employees don’t give and shouldn’t give a shit about their job is going to happen to these companies who can’t promise some semblance of job stability.
Sundar is best
This viral LinkedIn post linked in the article from a Google staff engineer is an absolute must read (and the comments too). https://www.linkedin.com/posts/dhtheriault_my-hot-take-google-does-not-have-one-single-activity-7153269568893775872-9xzp
It’s clear tech companies had no idea what they were doing during COVID. Offer crazy salaries to new employees, demoralize older employees, then random layoffs for two years, demoralize them more. I wasn’t around for dotcom bubble but I wonder if this situation is the biggest detriment to tech since then. It’s gonna happen again with AI and ridiculous data science salaries as everyone tries to get their piece of the pie
