Is it good to let your manager know about your future aspiration( let’s say you would want to switch from role A to B ) ? I feel scared because in my previous company my manger used it against me and affected my performance review.
Really depends on the manager. My manager is supportive and so am I. I'd rather guide an employee to her or his next job than burn bridges or have to deal with an unmotivated person on the team.
Which division at MSFT?
Realize that rewards are distributed by managers in order to incentivize employees to stay, and there is a fixed total. So in the next review round, even if he’s a great person, is he really going to hurt a more loyal employee in order to reward you even though you’re likely to leave?
No, not at all at Msft. My manager invoked a similar conversation and later dinged my rewards. I was a rock star performer that year and his justification was that Team didn’t see me as a long term asset. mean but true. Unfortunately ms is full of such shitty mgrs, especially the ones who have been at ms for many many years.
As @UPiO54 said, it depends on the manager. A good manager will help you develop to your next role. It also depends on what A and B are. Some managers are more incentivize to support certain transitions (does role B exist in the space etc). If you aren’t sure if you can trust your manager to support this change consider sharing smaller portions of the goal. For example if you need skill X for B and X can also help in A have him support you building that. Sorry if that’s vague, hard to give specific advice without knowing the level of change.
I would recommend against it.
Could you expand a little more !
It's a risk, and one that could put your job in jeopardy. It would be better to network and gain visibility and skills on your own instead of depending on your manager. They don't really get incentives to help your progression.
I would also recommend against it… I had expressed my team trajectory goals with my manager whom I had very good rapport with, and was walked out a week later... only thing I can imagine is that I was already considered a threat, but still have zero justification for the walkout other than "performance related"... This was in Azure
Wow! What kind of goals did you possibly have that could have led to that?
You only share that with your mentor, not your manager!
