How Twitters engineers feel about this idea? Personally, seems quite dumb for me and shows that Musk have no idea how things work. Or maybe he has and is just playing for the public. You can open source the Machine Learning code, but that will help nothing without the user data, the internal context, etc.. https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1525739780323016704
Musk wants to suppress bad news about him especially $tslaq. He is a conman at best.
Jack basically wanted to do the same, but didn't have the fu money to do it.
Elon doesn't have the will and liquidity to buy tweeter. He is just messing around
He already did -- all patents are freely licensed.
That's literally what Apache 2.0 or any other modern license says. š¤·āāļø Mozilla Firefox is licensed the exact same way! They give you a free license to all their patents, but if you sue them, then the license automatically terminates.
Elon is a clown and is delivering on the circuses part of ābread & circusesā
I think people in the tech community take the term "open source" too literally. The term is being used for the general public. Take it to mean you can know and understand exactly what decisions were made about your feed with what information and why.
Rather, itās clear that Elon doesnāt understand what a) an algorithm is or b) what open source means.
I doubt that

There's no doubt the algorithm on every social media with a ranked feed could be improved. That's why there's teams of engineers assigned to work on that algorithm. What's concerning is how this can be open sourced without making the problem worse. If people know how to reach the feed, they will abuse it. It's like open sourcing the spam detection algorithms of email providers and abusers finding a way around it. I see a ton of fake amazon/paypal emails failing to hit my spam box these days. I am curious to see what he tries to do with it but this gives a similar vibe to how politicians make over the top promises during elections and then walk them back once elected.
Abusers find a way around it and then engineers make it better. Thatās like the ad blockers, ads get better at going around them and then ad blockers get even better. I donāt think itās a bad idea to open source the twitter algorithm. However I donāt understand what he means by open sourcing āthe algorithmā. I guess thereās no one algorithm around here but a complex system where multiple āalgorithmsā are applied to specific use cases. How do you open source that. Also do you open source only the code? Also the models with weights? What if the features are not available then the model is useless. Do you open source the features as well? Open sourcing the algorithm(s), to be really effective in giving transparency to researchers and engineers out there, sounds like a very hard task to do, I doubt it is going to happen.
Ad blockers are a great comparison. At every large company dependent on ads, there are engineers dedicated to combatting ad blockers. They do not open source their ads infrastructure, probably because more people are interested in removing the ads than making the ad experience better. If we open source "the algorithm" (i dont work on this btw), there is a big question of how much support we'll really receive to make it better vs the amount of abuse we'll have to combat.
