My Google PIP story

Maybe someone will recognize me because I’ve been open about this story. Either way, please don’t dox me. I’m hoping my path will help at least one person. It was pre-TK (current GCP ceo) and Google was a different place. I was a SWE in GCP. I’m no rockstar but not a dud too, imo. My management chain has these idiots from Microsoft and Amazon. It should’ve been a red flag but live-n-learn right? 3 of us went to our director about our teams poor charter, because our manager and skip were not listening. He solved nothing too but promised good projects. 1 month later, 4 out of 5 on the team got NI (needs improvement, lowest rating) and two of us got PIPs too. It was stressful. I asked the skip for more context, but he told me that Bay Area is big and I can find another job easily, and that he’ll find me wherever I go too (it was a veiled threat, imo). The context was all conjecture too. Anyway, I contacted HRBP, told them about this, cried a bit spontaneously and said I’m in therapy. The HRBP fast tracked my STD (short term disability for the non-USA) folks. I was given 3 months fully paid leave. In the first fortnight, I found a different team and HR handled this with kid gloves. I had to sign a document saying I wasn’t forced to change teams. Not a big deal. It worked out well. I also found out that the ex-skip was bad-mouthing us to the new team. He was promoted in the next cycle. So, I lodged a complaint and the HR didn’t do much. They might spoken to him but the internal investigations team has a bunch of “company is holy” pricks. I was at google for 5 years after this. And it was a good time. My lesson was to advocate for yourself, finding an alternative before it is needed, and to create a information overload with HR if you need their help. If they help, you’ll suffer less. Really! #google #mentalhealth #pip

I mean you can always shoot him too 🤣 jk When a man has nothing to lose that is when you are the most dangerous but that’s kinda fucked that he will go whenever you go in the bay area

This is pretty much how every company weed out low performers. not saying you are one. Just saying this is not as unusual as you think.

Atlassian gz98d4 OP Mar 2, 2023

I don’t care if I’m a low performer too. After that and another experience, being a good, positive person is my goal in life. I don’t care about company bottom line. I care about my team, and users (privacy mostly) and that’s it :/

Amazon lets_sync Mar 2, 2023

Yeah that’s what that matters. Glad you’re in a good place now.

Sounds very toxic. You’re better off leaving.Toxic management is nearly impossible to change.

What does it mean to create hubris with HR? Doesn’t hubris mean like cocky, overconfidence?

The director was threatened by you. You skipped 2 levels to complain and didn’t give them notice to manager and skip. To the director, you could go to CEO next and skip VP. Be careful, this isn’t just Google, Amazon or Microsoft. I was at a startup. My friend got warning for just sending request for new laptop without looping his manager in.

Atlassian gz98d4 OP Mar 2, 2023

Fair. You might have got it right. I didn’t think that way all these years. I’m taken over by hatred for these idiots. But these three was in cahoots. Similar culture from Amazon and MS. Cutthroat and backstabby.

LinkedIn chatgeept Mar 2, 2023

I was the same. Now idgaf. We can only take down power with power. Before going to war, we better prep to win

Do what your upper manager tells you to do. If you dont like the team, work or have bad wlb then switch. Nothing specific to fangs. This is how corporate culture works.

That’s how pushovers work too. Pushovers, doormats, whatever the latest fancy term for it is nowadays. We get one life, and it’s best to try to make it good instead of being a _____

Whats “information overload” ?

Atlassian gz98d4 OP Mar 2, 2023

Tell them everything. If you panic, if you have self harm thoughts, etc. Tell them everything. Once they realize they have a lawsuit at their hands, they are on your side. And in my experience, once this case closes, they don’t bother with you again. Maybe it’s on a file somewhere but who cares. Didn’t affect me anymore

Google plixyvddxg Mar 27, 2023

So HR is afraid that you sue the company? So they try to help so that you won't? Do I understand this right?
