Started as a research scientist in ML for a telecom company. Did amazing stuff and published papers. - ~2 years Left that for a unicorn AI startup. Joined as a data scientist and worked on amazing state of the art ML projects. But got laid off in 7 months. 5 months later, struggling, I took the first offer I got at a series A startup. Joined as a data scientist as well. Didn’t get to do much impactful work due to poor resources and management. Got laid off in 6 months. 4 months later, now, joining as a data scientist at a regional bank. After my first successful job, I thought I would be upgrading my career. But seems like I am just going downhill. TC progression - 150K > 230K > 140K > 165K
Don’t worry it’ll fall in place, give yourself this year. Suck up BS, once market picks up again it’ll be great.
I hope so. I am worried about the skills gap and quality of work.
You might struggle like this into your 40s, you are still in the top 10% with an upper middle class job. I know you want stability and want to be rich, not just very comfortable. Maybe it’ll happen. Maybe it won’t. And you know what? You have already proven that you will be fine so whatever happens next will be fine. Just do your best. Any better is impossible.
You speak like a fortune teller lurking in the corner of the street.
What if I do? I was thinking I was sounding like a therapist but a lot of the time, it’s pretty close
It’s not that bad man ! But I echo other comments of working on a real tech company. What’s your background btw
Enjoy your time outside of big tech. The stress is almost always much lower
I was in a similar boat a year back. Dint change companies a lot like you but was very unsatisfied and in a corrosive environment in Amazon. I came up with a plan, remained very patient, prepared really well and ended up joining Google. I hear that G culture has gone down a lot now, but still much better for me. DM me if you need inspirations and the steps I followed
Hey, I'm also trying to get into big tech. Can I dm to know about your study plan and how you stayed motivated through the process?
Work at a real tech company and not some old fashioned company or series A startup.
Ofc I would love to. But it’s just hard to get interviews in this market
