Every. Single. Website. I go to has a pop up that asks if I am OK with standard data collection or if I want to opt out. You cannot opt out once and for all for all website. Each. Website. Will. Ask. Every. Single. One. It's super annoying. Every website you visit will have a pop up regarding GDPR!!! If you reject data collection, you have to perform about 4 more clicks and navigate thru additional pop ups on each website, whereas it takes 1 click to accept default preferences..... I just click accept to conserve time and energy.... This is quite a bottleneck to just surfing and researching online. I hope we never get GDPR in US. End rant. What does everyone else think about this?
It’s annoying but if people become complacent with these bad experiences then no companies will be motivated to fix them. I always go through the extra steps to stop sharing my data, poor UX should not be rewarded
Europe has made itself the leader of tech regulation via GDPR precisely because it doesn't have a tech industry to regulate. You listen to all their officials and they're totally out of touch. They say that "Europe will be able to compete by offering regulated AI/tech" when in reality, their formula is to regulate any non European tech out of existence because they can't build an industry of their own.
Honestly it’s not even a strategical decision against the US. It’s more like we had a bunch of incompetent politicians who wanted to pretend they were tech savvy
Ha I can totally see that too. When political science types who don't have real industry experience get involved in these things it's always a problem. Just people jockeying to flex in their power games I guess?
I had taken a course in my grad school - Usable security and privacy. All we did was research the tradeoffs between security and CX. High security almost always comes with bad customer experience. It's a delicate balance from business perspective. In the end, it's up to you what you value more from customer perspective. Atleast you have the option to opt out. In US you either opt in or can go fuck off. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side. FYI: There are security departments who precisely try to get the best deal out of CX for a secure feature. QQ: Has anyone used Brave? Does it help in this case?
I use Brave everyday. Doesn't help a single bit against those useless popups.
Annoying JavaScript popup doesn’t add any security. The opt out is usually site is not working properly
Yes, it’s really annoying.
Heard of VPN?
Part of the problem is that many websites, for sake of simplicity, will apply EU regulations globally just to simplify the overhead.
Good idea, poorly implemented. It will have negative consequences in the long run, because people will be conditioned to think privacy = painful, so it’s not worth bothering with. It could have been purposefully implemented in this way to have this negative effect on people over time, and erode privacy further. Thanks EU!
Annoying as fk, 100% agree. Every time I go to Europe I get pissed off about it.
It's illegal for websites to have those horrible 20-step submenus to disallow personalized cookies. Rejecting must be as simple as accepting, if they have such an Interface. Yes, this means that a huge part of websites don't comply with the regulation and should get their asses kicked. It's damn annoying. Note that they don't need an annoying cookie banner at all! No need to have one - if they only store impersonal data like settings etc. But of course they want they want to annoy you as much as possible to 'accept' them profiling you and increasing their ad revenue. Of course they could also honor a browser-wide setting that accepts or rejects such cookies. Have a guess why they don't... In summary, I think the regulation makes sense but many companies don't comply. This makes it a horrible experience. Such companies need to get high fines. The regulation should also be amended so something like a browser settings must be accepted without further annoyances, though regulating something technical is always a bit tricky
Dude, if it's free, you are the product. I don't mind collecting cookies at all its usually better for me since the ads I see are more relevant
GDPR is a good intention badly executed. You can’t f00king share slides of interviewees’ talk or invite your team to listen to interviewee talks without seeking each teammate’s explicit ask to be added and included. You can not share talks period . What nonsense. It’s stopping free flow of ideas even in academia.

Why do Indians support Israel so much( on blind surprisingly) when Israel really thinks 💩of them ?
I live in Europe, and I hate it. So ridiculous. I don’t need anyone to tell me there are peanuts in a bag of peanuts.
The lawmakers are just a bunch of plain farts for not giving a second of thought to the detriment that's going to be caused to the UX. There should have been a way for browsers to directly tell websites what sort of tracking users prefer.
