Just reconnected with an ex-colleague and found out she was let go from Facebook last week. She’s one of the smartest people I know and I’m shocked to hear that FB dares to fire people during this time. Like can they even hire anyone new right now?!? She was there for only 9 months and apparently didn’t meet the expectations from her manager. They kinda talked about it but nothing about PIP so she was surprised as well. Anyway, I just want to shame Facebook for firing such a great talent. She was so kind and fun to work with. Makes me wonder if she got backstabbed by her teammates. Is that the culture there? #tech #facebook #fired Update: Hi all, this post blew up so I can’t reply to you all. From reading most of the comments here, I noticed that there are 2 groups. One said that it’s normal. The other one said it’s impossible and fake. I don’t know all the details about her previous ratings and conversations with manager, etc. but I can assure you that this post is REAL. She reached out because she needed a referral and of course I can only know her side of the story. But I know she was one of the best engineers I’ve met. She’s super smart, hardworking, and selfless. She helped me a lot when we were on the same team, which is why I’m emotional about her being fired. And no, I do not have any romantic feelings toward her. You can call this post fake if you want, doesn’t affect me.
How many YOE did she have? Sorry to hear.
4 yoe
Was she E4 or E5?
New grad? If yes then it is not uncommon
New grads can be fired so quickly?
Why is firing a new grad more common?
Ok.
"zuccdaddy" Hmmm...
I was at FB few years back. And I know at least one PIP / firing based on solely a TL’s quick judgment on a new hire. Basically new hire was let go in ~1 year. The manager was new to FB and he put 10x weight to TL’s one full cycle’s review.
"he put 10x weight to TL's one full cycle review" What does this mean?
I’m assuming the Manager drastically overvalued the team lead’s feedback.
That's the most optimistic reasoning for the hiring freeze I have come across yet 😂 Let me assure you that this is not the case 🤡
Why not?
FB is one of those woke companies where they think twice about gender and race before letting someone go. Sorry that it happened to your friend. Did she really get fired (as in, walked out the same day) or got laid off (as in, she was given notice of 1-2 weeks)?
Not sure what’s the difference. She got the notice a week ahead but cannot work for that week. So basically let go the same day.
The former is really for something serious (breach of code of conduct, did something illegal etc. ) in which case you are walked out the same day. Since they gave her a week notice, this is more like a layoff (PIP is a systematic layoff).
I’ve heard FB was firing people right after the bootcamp
Wow
Objection, hearsay!
Was she uplevled?
Even with this, they will give ample signals to person before firing.
Getting fired in 9 months is impressive. What did your friend do? My team had a E6 get fired but it took a year while they did nothing and fought with other teams.
E6 was at FB for 1 year and then got fired?
Yes
Can someone be fired even before completing 1 year ?
Apparently
6 months is fb timeline
