Seems to be accumulating a lot of e-stuff (documents, photos, videos etc). What is the best way to store them? I am thinking of getting a networked attached storage, instead of paying Dropbox or something similar. Any recommendations? With Comcast imposing data caps, it feels like it makes more sense to have an NAS than use everything from cloud? I need something that works with Android, iOS, Windows, Mac and preferably Chromebooks too! Better if I can have multiple accounts and quotas, but that is not a must. Any recommendations?
TrueNAS. Even if you don't need it for the capacity, it's good to use ZFS just for the safety of data you care about.
That's just the software, right? Any recommendations on the hardware?
The TrueNAS mini starts at $699 and without the disks. That seems overkill for my use case. I was thinking something like Synology. But don't know if I can install TrueNAS on it.
iCloud secure and works on windows and macs. Not sure about android and chrome os. Cost cheaper than NAS with 0 maintenance
I have a Synology NAS backed up to Google drive and Amazon glacier.
What clients do you use it with? Mac, Windows, Android, iOS?
Mac and iOS both via native remote filesystem mounting (SMB). I stream videos off it with Plex. For docs and stuff, I use Google drive synced with a folder on the nas.
You should have your stuff layered. I personally have a NAS with RAID-1 (2 disks in mirror mode) and have a cloud drive configured to sync with the NAS. Remember that cloud drives won't guarantee 100% resiliency. Nobody can guarantee 100% anything so you are better off by having some overlapping. You can also get a USB disk to backup the NAS if you are extra paranoid.
What NAS do you have, and what clients do you use (Mac, Windows, iOS, Android?)
Synology NAS and Windows PC, but since it's a NAS it really doesn't matter the client, right? As long as it is on periodically to push/pull data to/from cloud, any client would do the trick. I use OneDrive because I can get it at high discount, but you can use anything really. It is even better if you can find a NAS (mine is quite old) where you can install a cloud client.

Isn't it a cloud backup of NAS? I'm looking for NAS.
Yes. I used to have NAS but too much maintenance and cost
