A few months after joining a new company, there was a TEMP reorg due to another team manager on leave, my skip manager became my new temp manager. New (skip) manager out of blue asked me if I had experience in X, I said no, but would like to learn more about it. A few weeks later, I got tasked to do something related about X, then task expanded to be a project, and more. Later, new (skip) manager announced, instead of getting a rotational manager to temp fill the manager role, thereās now a headcount and they will be hiring someone permanently and at my location which mean he/she will likely be my eventual manager. I read the JD, and it specifically included X experience as something preferred and my experience is not far off from the requirement. I am wondering if new (skip) manager has considered me as a possible candidate, or am I over-thinking here? Also, Iām interested in the opportunity, but I just recently joined the team, should I tell my new (skip) manager about my interest? I would appreciate some sound advise on how to approach this opportunity? Thanks.
I didnāt mean like something bad, but rather, just want to know by expressing my aspirations, would that bring more attention to my performance that is all or anything else that I need to be aware of.
That will be a given of course right, if youāre going to ask for promotion/ growth, then only way out is to prove yourself to that level. That means more conscious effort on manager part on your workload. Thats how it works š atleast from my perspective
I agree. While I understand in order to get promoted I will need to show or prove it. But is this the right timing? To be frank, I wish this opportunity were to happen a bit later, then I think I would be more prepared for it. Right now thereās still a lot of things I need to learn about this role, even tho my background/experiences may meet the requirements, I almost feel like I may be too āgreenā in leadershipās eyes, so is it worth it to go for this opportunity?
Let him know your interest and hone up your skills on this new X. Keep him posted on your progress
What would be the potential consequences or downside if new (skip) manager reject me on the spot? Iām thinking I would put myself under the microscope for a long time?
Hmm! The worst thing that could happen is he will say you no, I donāt understand why u will be in the microscope for expressing your interest and aspirations. But if you have a strong judgment that something negative will happen out if this, then yeah i would say trust your instincts
