Hey all, I’m thinking of joining NVIDIA’s AV project from Waymo. What is everyone’s impression of it? Is this a good career move or should I stay far away? What types of interview questions do they ask planner engineers? TOC: ~450k
OP mind explain more on why making this choice?
I’ve seen a lot of dysfunction at Waymo. Many teams doing the same work, management which doesn’t understand the domain, squabbling between adjacent disciplines, poor technical leadership, etc. I’m ready for something else.
Thanks OP. I guess L4 robotaxi will just be hard to land in the next few years. What is NV doing? Are they targeting for L2 and doing OEM for car manufacturers? I think that may be a better business approach.
Don’t do it. The story changes everyday! Stick to Waymo
Can you elaborate?
I’d love to hear some elaboration too!
Me too!
Your exp?.
Folks at Waymo: NVIDIA and Cruise must be doing some pretty cool stuff, did you see their latest demo? Folks at NVIDIA: Waymo and Cruise must be doing some pretty cool stuff, did you see their latest demo? Folks at Cruise: NVIDIA and Waymo must be doing some pretty cool stuff, did you see their latest demo? Folks at Tesla: We charge 10k for pretty much the same features that everyone else has and call it as a beta (forever) and get away with it.
🤣
Side note: I can't believe actual SWEs who have touched ML believe Tesla can deliver FSD. Pure deep learning for decision making is uninterpretable and so hard to hill climb on. And from what I can tell they haven't even been focusing on planning, instead the focus of the past 2 years has been getting their perception system to the level of Waymo/Cruise in 2019...
No difference. FSD to rule them all.
Care to explain why?
I used to work in the automotive team in nvidia (just switched to Apple last year). At least at that time, the low level SW team (OS/driver level) was competent and delivered quality SW for releases (since they actually have customers). The AV team however is a cluster fuck. Some folks have their head way up their ass and have no idea what they’re doing. Really hope the situation has improved because I truly do believe in their products and hope to see more cars with their tech on the roads
Hi, Can I DM you regarding the OS team at Nvidia?
What aspects of the AV team was a cluster fuck?
WLB and pay are great. Job stability is better at Nvidia AV than most other AV companies. Work is interesting most of the time and I feel career growth opportunities are also good. I’m in the planning team, joined last year. I was asked C++ LC (medium, easy), explain past work algorithms, some architecture system design, some testing approach questions. Overall, the interview was pretty easy.
What version of C++ is used there?
I confirm that WLB is great. Pay is great if considering the stock appreciation, otherwise the pay is not comparable to Google for sure.
Side question: Is Tesla actually leading the race or not?
I want to know as well.
In terms of a self driving car product you can get your hands on right now, yes. But as far as the actual self driving car tech, no. Waymo is still significantly ahead imo
Interesting choice
