NVIDIA IC5 and career progression

Hey guys, I’m expecting an offer from NVIDIA for an IC role in product. However, I could be promoted to management in the next year at my current company. - How different is the comp for IC5 vs IC4? Does 16 YOE place me in the IC5 level? - Is a Director role at NVIDIA first-line management, and how difficult is it to get promoted to a first-line manager role later? Thanks #tech #level #manager

16YOE should place you in IC6-IC7 range IC5 is not director role

The hiring manager is a Director at NVIDIA. Hence my question whether first line managers are all Directors there

NVIDIA cvbvvb Nov 23, 2023

No. But there are directors who are first line managers ie no managers reporting to them

Are you also on the stage of ref checking and asked for expected salaries? How long they told you for responding your number and offer? Btw, manager is the 1st-line management, that's ic5

Are you making a lateral move or step down? If lateral it is fine. You are going to get management opportunities later on as well.

Oracle careergoal OP Nov 22, 2023

It’s a lateral move. I’m worried that moving to an IC role at NVIDIA will make me prove myself again and delay my goal to get into people management. If I continue here, there will likely be chances to become a people manager in a year.

If people management is your goal then you should stick to Oracle. nVidia may or may not have that kind of an opportunity in the near term.

Take the management role, if you make the IC moves you’ll forever stay there.
