1) The numbers we have so far are not cohort based. That's the first problem getting to a 2% number. 2) The average stay in hospital for those who are "recovered" is 5 weeks. 3) The US has no surge capacity for ICU beds. We have fewer ventilators and CT scanners then China. 4) Even not soing the math on cohort based numbers, the number is not 2%. 2770 / 81273 is .034 5) That 3.4% fatality rate, if you time series, has been rising steadily since we started getting numbers. This suggests the cohort numbers differ significantly, statistically, week to week. 6) The reinfection rate for those who are "recovered" is 14%. They can still transmit the disease. 7) The demand for medical services could make the prospects for those getting treatment for heart and cancer issues difficult. That's a compounding secondary effect yet to be calculated. I'm prepared and feel its manageable. However I dont think most are. If that group of people all gets concerned at once, that could trigger other events.
How are you prepared? What are you doing to be prepared?
Copy Pasta from above. I have food and water for a month for me and wife and cats. We live in a smallish subdivision with large lots right outside city limits. Single way in and out. Neighbors are very reasonable people and like minded on safety. We have defensive capabilities if we had to. Have more gas stored then I am fully comfortable with, lucky thats out in a shed. We have medicines, PPE, Gloves, Gogs, Masks, Suits. A possibility to create a negative pressure environment if someone gets sick (2hp dust collector running in reverse can move a shitload of air) in the neighborhood. Plastic Sheeting. Security surveillance system off cloud. 10kw battery system. Well based water supply and 50 gallons stored in potable conatiners (5 gallon bottles) and 750 gallons of rainwater collection. Added: Cash on hand. Entertainment/board games/videogames. Side remote gigs that take very little time and pay monthly. Tappable savings in bank to cover a year of expenses. Ask if you have any Q's. It seems like a lot, but we have done it slowly over time and just somehow ended up here ready when this broke. We added food to the pantry, gas and cash on hand, but everything else is part of our typical life.
Most hospitals in the US don’t have ICU beds open. The good news is that you don’t need ICU beds if it’s early. The bad news is that most hospitals don’t have that many isolation rooms, especially airborne isolation rooms. So like we are basically screwed if it gets bad.
Well with some plastic tarp, and a dust collector from harbor freight (china suppy line) you can DIY a negative pressure unit for a house. I dont use it for that, I bought it for insulation removal.
What a bunch of babies.
And you will be the exact kind of person who gets 0 assistance from not just me, but the entire large community of people who are prepared for life and its possibilities. Whats shocking is you dont even realize that DHS has a standing recommendation for everyone to have a 30 day supply of many of the items I listed. Good luck, you are gonna need it.

What steps do you think people should take to prepare themselves. What steps did you take?

The main thing that caught my eye was “defensive capabilities”. Do you mean like a M16 at home or are you referring to a main battle tank, matadors, tomahawks.. you know...
