Ya thats the downside of being in the US. The labor is too expensive. I am from India, and literally you can get someone for 24*7 for INR 1000-1500 (14-20USD) per day or even lesser
Haha
Sounds low tbh
Children are a lot of work. And you don’t want a psycho watching them
This. Never understood why people want cheap labour to look after your kids. You want talented labour and usually don't get that by paying McDonald's prices
You just said rents are 3k-4k/mo and 1k/week is 4k/mo. How are they going to live?
1) second earner in family 2) live in cheaper neighborhoods 3) rent stabilized Where you live dictates nanny salaries they talk and know what each other is getting paid and every perk they get.
Sounds like you’re describing an efficient market.
Yup. That's the norm. It sucks. It's life in NYC. What's worse is after a year they want a raise and a Christmas bonus equal to one weeks pay. To be helpful here daycares are a cheaper alternative. That's up to you and your point of views though.
Former nanny here (7+ years ago). Yes, that is actually on the low end. Also expect to be asked about transportation and healthcare. Don’t want to pay it? Look into daycare, a nanny share or expect your nanny to leave for higher pay. Many nannies have masters in child education fields. Whatever you decide, you’ll get what you pay for.
I don't think OP cares whether their nanny has a bachelor's let alone a master's.
If you’re privileged enough to afford a nanny for your child then you have no right to complain. Do what the other 99.99% do and have your spouse take care of them or daycare.
I'm not complaining, it was a shock to hear the rates. I've seen so many nannies around, I don't expect so many people spend so much money, specially after such high taxes (fed+state+city)
You’re asking for a nanny - not a babysitter or daycare. That’s an all day commitment. So basically a $50k/year pre-tax salary. Now compare that to what you make when you feel your cost of living is expensive.
Why wouldn’t you expect a full time, high-trust job to cost that much? How much would you want to get paid to watch someone else’s kids day in and day out? Welcome to the world of being an employer.
$52k/year for full time nanny taking care of kids is a no joke job. Not much of a livable wage in coast cities unless their partner works too
