Seeing stuff like on-call becoming more 'part of the job', working late into the night or weekends being the unofficial expectation more and more often makes me think that whole culture is spreading across the work life here. WFH and hybrid remote seem to have sped this up too. While hoping all the data and lessons about increased productivity would lead to long work cultures disappearing, are we adopting it in a culture it was absent?
I think op is referring the to work culture stemmed from China. I have heard of 996, but maybe it is 997 now. https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=996 >>It is a kind of working hours policy in some IT relevant companies. It means working from 9 am to 9 pm every day and 6 days per week. It originally came from Alibaba.
Is there such a thing as 117. Literally working 24/7 like I’m a celebrity’s secretary but working for the North Korean dictator. I’m not even in an on-call role
Ha unfortunately yes, it's called double o'7
The name’s bond. James Bond
Just work at Microsoft where they adopt a 913 culture (9am - 1pm, 3 days a week).
Beat you to it already, have my start date in 10 days.
Cisco was similar in some orgs
I ignore emails on the weekends. Good luck trying to reach me 😂
no oncall duties?
You think companies really have leverage to make their engineers work 84hrs/week in the middle of a talent crunch that's only getting worse every year? X doubt.
This seems to keep popping up not at full company level but rather mid level management -- more and more leads pressuring juniors to put in overtime etc.
On Call has always been the culture at Travelport because it makes a shoddy product that constantly breaks for the 5 or so people who still use it.
That's not really fair, it's the rubber stamping, Internet Explorer using, quasi-pension collecting dinosaurs at CAB that want any and all deployments to be performed at on-call hours. But seriously, it's not fair to roast TVP for the work hours. With Elliott cutting off the literal industry leading benefits the chill work hours are the only good thing it has left

What does a Porsche 911 have anything to do with tech culture?
Porsche is so overrated. It's just BMW with a better brand name recognition among boomers
The only people in my book who have the right to say Porsches are overrated are people who drive classics, Alfas or something else super special like rally/motorsport homologation cars. For the rest of us, they’re fucking dope.
