Hi Blinders, I can really use some advice in what should be my next move or if i really need to reframe my thinking. I have two BSc (one in bioinformatics) and an MBA. 7 years experience on technical side and 6 on the commercial/ marketing side. I feel like my career at illumina has progressed much slower than I hoped (too many managers in my 5 years here) and after the last reorg, i won’t get the title or salary that I want. I spent 4 years in product management and now in alliance management. I’m contemplating a position at a pharma company that would be right up my alley but I’m afraid it would put in a role for X years that is even further away from what the tech industry usually hires for (GOOG, AMZ, MSFT all have Health Care Life Sciences groups that deal in my specialty - genomics), since most of the non-technical hires are product managers. Thank you all. I’ve seen how supportive you can be as a community and hoping you can bring me some clarity of thought and some sleep at night. TC: $150k YOE: 13 #tech #tc #biotech
Stumbled on this thread a little late but here are a few options: 1) Jump ship to a direct ILMN competitor or someone in the same space that pays more. PacBio, Element Biosciences, Guardant Health, Thermo Fisher, etc. Keep doing the same thing you're doing at ILMN but somewhere new. You'll either have higher comp or you will have similar comp but greater chance of upside in the case of a startup. 2) Leverage the fact that ILMN is a big leader in genomics to work for a more life science based tech company. Your MBA and genomics experience means you can be a PM, customer success manager, scientific solutions consultant, even maybe do sales if you want/are into it. Examples here include Verily, Color Genomics, Benchling, etc. 3) Say fuck it to life sciences, sell the shit out of your MBA, study a lot for interviews, and pivot into Big Tech. You can find genomics-related roles in a lot of big tech companies (PM type stuff).
