New TC ~ 650k. Currently at a sub-Faang company (Lyft, Robinhood, etc size). So I need some feedback (preferably from EMs). I am going to join Google. I was hoping to give notice on Jan 15th, but at the same time, want to join Google in the month of Jan because new team at Google has been asking me several times not to delay the on boarding date. The only way for me to enable the above is to give a 1 week notice on Jan 15th, so that I can join Google on the following Monday How frowned upon is it to give a 1 week notice? I have a so-so relation with my team and managers and don't want to burn bridges (since I may boomerang back). The team is pretty toxic I would say. Mgr sucks, but I do like the company Few options I am considering: Option 1: Give only a 1 week notice, hoping that my management wouldn't really care and wouldn't blacklist me. Option 2: Give a 2 week notice on Jan 8th, hoping that my management doesn't punish me by terminating employment immediately and me loosing out on the Jan 15th vest. Option 3: Give a 2 week notice on Jan 15th and join Google in Feb,but this will piss off the new team at Google. Few more context: - $110k vesting on Jan 15th at my current company - I have a large grant from Google. Which means that only a 6% change in Google stock price would account for ~ $110k delta in $ amt.
Is January 15th a holiday at your current company?
Can you give your notice on 10th with hope that they are okay with a 10 day notice and you get to keep your vest as well as join google within January
Just give 1-week notice. It’s business.
Eh, I’d give 2 because it’s standard practice and I like to leave a positive impression on my way out the door. That being said, I wouldn’t fault you for only giving 1 and I doubt your coworkers would either.
Call out (I you’re in the US): check your holiday calendar for 2024, Jan 15 might be a holiday. If the markets are closed, then your vest won’t happen until 1/16. In most cases, I’d say a full one week notice is not ideal, but won’t burn bridges. Giving a 4 day notice during a short week is a little more hectic. If you do this, just be sure your transition plan is already set/defined as best you can, and then maybe say you’ll be available to answer any open questions through X date. You’re more likely to be walked out immediately upon resignation the shorter your notice period is. HR usually has some say in how it goes, so it shouldn’t be solely your managers decision. Not sure how HR is at your company though. Is google going to revoke your offer if you don’t start on the 22? Everyone always needs you to start last week. An additional week won’t be detrimental in the long run. It’s gonna take them a lot longer to hire someone new than to have you start on the 29th. You’re not delaying the onboarding date unnecessarily. You’re vesting, they’re well aware of the implications. If they need you to start on the 22, then they need to be prepared to offer you a sign on bonus equivalent of your vest if you give notice on the 8th.
Give 1 week notice or overlap jobs by 1 week
One week notice OP
How did you get a TC for 650k at Google? That’s really high for L6, but low for L7, so I’m confused. You should 100% just give 1 weeks notice or overlap the jobs by a week if necessary. 1 less week of notice isn’t going to change anything if you start prepping transition early.
I have seen it.
I’ve seen higher TC than that at Google, but at L7. I’m just wondering if OP is L6 with that TC because if so congrats and thanks for pulling the industry pay up.
2 week notice on Jan 15th + start Google on Jan 15th. Manage overlapping employment for 2 weeks. Tell Google you need to start remotely for the first couple of weeks.

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Can you do two week notice and just chill the second week when you start at google? Like leave laptop on at home or whatever. AFAIK no one makes you do anything last week and if you’re in person you can just say you’re sick or something.
Is it legal if OP is on visa? Otherwise sounds OK.
Fair point. It’s technically possible with a separate H1B application for a second full-time job. Unsure about other visas
