tl;dr - Have a new grad offer with a deadline next week but still interviewing elsewhere with more preferable companies. What should I do? Got an offer from Wayfair for a new grad position. Initially, they only gave me 2 business days to accept the offer but I managed to extend it until the end of the next week. I'm still interviewing with a couple other companies which I'd prefer over Wayfair, but the chances of me actually getting an offer from one of them is very 50/50 at this stage and I definitely won't get to know before Wayfair's deadline. FYI, this is the labs program so base and bonus are non-negotiable. So far I think I have three options: 1. Get them to increase signing bonus by telling them I'll stop interviewing at other companies and accept right away, and stick to Wayfair. 2. Accept the offer for now. Later, if I get a better offer from another company, explain the situation to Wayfair and politely decline. (Keep in mind I'm still in Uni graduating in 2 months) 3. Decline and move on. (Kinda risky) I would love to go with No. 2 if possible but I'm not sure at all what the consequences are going to be. Plus I'll have to return the signing bonus I'm assuming. How official is it once a company gives you your signing bonus? Looking for some guidance here, would love to know what you guys think.
Assuming you are in university, declining an offer after accepting it sometimes leads to interview ban for hiring from university career center. I would suggest Option 1. If they don't increase bonus accept it and decline later when you get a better offer. They deserve it in that case.
Thanks for your input. Could you elaborate what you mean by "interview ban for hiring from university career center"? FYI, I'm graduating in 2 months and all my applications have been through company websites.
Definitely option 2. I did this once, also when I was back in the University because I got a better offer after I already signed one. I have honestly explained my reasons and sincerely apologised. It was an unpleasant call, but no more than that. No consequences (well, I probably won't be invited to that company again). Consider this: if the company had a budget cut, would they hesitate at all before rescinding your offer?
Thanks! Knowing someone got away with it in a similar situation really helps! I guess a potentially bad relationship with a single company is the best sacrifice here. And yep, very true bout the budget cut scenario.
BTW, make sure the offer from Wayfair is at-will before signing it (that's by fat the likeliest case).
Company think for company, you think for you
Get another extension. Those deadlines are bullshit.
Wayfair is famous for these exploding offers. State that you’re still interviewing, give a deadline of when you want to decide by, and ignore the noise that the recruiters provide to you. So, option 4.
That would be ideal. I'm just scared that they might rescind the offer if I keep asking for extensions (I've already asked for one until the next week). Since you work there, do you know of any such cases in the past?
We don’t rescind offers unless you are actively being dishonest. Just tell them that you still have interviews scheduled and will be deciding in November.
