Hi Blind,
After 170+ leetcode and been rejected by Google and Amazon I feel exhausted and slightly depressed. I need to move on and want to try FAANG in 1 year again, but have no motivation doing leets. Noone can guarantee that I wouldn't fail next year, no matter how many leets I do. Also, I understand that FAANG are just tech companies with big salaries and good wlb. And even if I would make it, there still a possibility to encounter common problems, like bad project, toxic colleagues, etc.
On the other side, I really enjoy to work on my private project. I use and learn interesting stuff comparing to soulless algos, which I never use in my work. Most likely, it won't bring me any significant income, but there is a slight possibility though.
So, fellow Blinders. What would you choose?

Can't you do both? Why this has to be one or the other?

I see. In that case I'd work on project for the first 8 months and spend the last 4 months studying and LC. Work on your weak areas and maybe read an actual book on algorithms first. 3 months should be really enough, 4 is plenty. No need to spend a full year on this shit

Sounds like a plan. Definitely need some rest from leetcode, or perhaps make 1 day of leetcode, 6 day project. And increase this ratio over time.

170 LeetCode is a solid start, what was the distribution of easy, medium, hard?

At Google 1 round didn't go well and they expected more detailed SD
At Amazon, don't even know. Recruiter said that 2 rounds which I thought were flawless - went not so good. Probably, a miscommunication either between me and interviewer, or between me and recruiter, since I believe she was not sure about rounds ordering.

Amazon recruiters sometimes are quite clueless, I’d follow the HM and the SDEs who are interviewing me more closely. For Amazon, probably the other candidates that were interviewing with you did better? (Was that on-site?) Also consider if you solved them optimally with the right speed, tackled edge cases, discussed tradeoffs and your solution is sound and complete. Or maybe they deemed you unfit according to LPs. There are people who are highly skilled in algos/SD but couldn’t pass the LPs for Amazon.

Just feel happy with your ptoject and try again in a year anyway. Doing “Leetcode” is not necessary and probably just stressing you out.

Your situation is similar to one of my friends who I coached. He also failed amz and Google, but tried again in a year and failed Google again but passed amz
