Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on my situation, especially if you work at this specific office. I received and accepted a new grad SWE offer from LM. The base pay is really good, better than any other offer I received. My only concern is the commute. The office is only 15 miles away but due to the terrible infrastructure in my area, there is one main highway there that always, like ALWAYS, has terrible traffic due to accidents, construction, rush hour, etc. There is no public transport option. My team is fully in person, working 4/10 schedule. I don't want to move closer to the office because it's out in the suburbs, and I love living in the city and don't want to sacrifice my personal life for work. If I leave no later than 7 a.m., I should be able to meet the morning rush and have a 25-minute commute, but in the evenings, it will be at about an hour with traffic. 45 min at minimum. Even if I got to work ridiculously early and left at 3, there was still traffic (I have been checking the GPS daily at various times, which I would be going and coming). I'm going to suck it up for a few months, at least just to get my career started, but I was thinking about what to do after or if I literally can't stand the commute. Do people usually actually stay all 10 hours in the office, or is there an unsaid rule you can leave if your work is done? Would it be easier to apply and transfer internally to a hybrid or remote role once I am already an employee? The office is in KOP for anyone familiar with the area Sorry for the long post. Thanks for reading. #tech #lockheed #softwareengineer #lockheedmartin
Career advice: learn as much as you can, work out. That should help you skip traffic. If you have nothing to do, you can take some online courses while in the office - that will probably get reimbursed too.
Earn, should have been Learn
What was your base pay for new grad nowadays? At least in my office doesn’t really matter when you work, long as you hit 40 hours and aren’t missing meetings. Most people are on for core hours of like 10-3. Lot of people will do 6-7 hours in office then head home and do last couple hours remote
TC? And yeah, KOP roads are trash (PA roads in general). While you suck it up, look to transfer teams. My manager is letting me look for new roles despite not having been here for a year. Good luck.
I’ve been hear just under a year, want to change roles similar to you. What was your reasoning and how’d it go
Tbh No one read that.
